Battery, Charging and Analysis with Midtronics INC-940

CAUTION: Danger of explosion!

Batteries produce explosive gasses while being charged.
Keep open flames and sparks away and DO NOT smoke near batteries.
The battery charger MUST be turned off when connecting or disconnecting the cables at the battery.
Battery cell caps must NOT be removed while charging.

"Boosting" a sulfated battery a high charging rate can cause an explosion.
Ensure battery is charged in a well ventilated area.
Precision tools must not be kept in the same room where batteries are being charged. Tools may corrode due to chemical reaction.

General Information

The INC-940 integrates battery charging with load and conductance testing (referred to here as "Charging and Analysis")

Only general procedure steps and information are listed below. Additional, detailed INC-940 charger setup and operation procedures not covered here may apply. In these cases, instructions to reference the INC-940 Instruction Manual are added. Example: "Additional details " INC-940 Instruction Manual

Starter Battery, Touareg with V6 and V8 Engine, Remote Location Charging

The starter battery (only) on Touareg with V6 and V8 engines may be charged via the remote location "starter / jumper terminal" as an alternative to direct charging at the battery. The following procedure applies. Heed applicable notes.

Accessory Battery, Touareg with V10 TDI Engine, Remote Location Charging

The accessory battery (only) on Touareg with V10 TDI engines may be charged via the remote location "starter / jumper terminal" as an alternative to direct charging at the battery. The following procedure applies. Heed applicable notes.

In order to obtain accurate results in all cases when charging via remote location, a reduced battery DIN value must be entered into the charger when using the "Manual" charge mode (described in detail below).

Battery, Eos with 3.2L, Charging

The following procedure also applies to Eos models with 3.2L engines (equipped with two, 6V AGM batteries located in the luggage compartment).

Batteries are connected in series to achieve 12V. As a result, the dual 6V battery system must always be regarded as a 12V system (described in detail below).

CAUTION:

Do not test or charge a single 6V battery
Do not replace a single 6V battery. 6V batteries must always be replaced as a pair.

Charging and Analysis, Prerequisites

CAUTION:

Switch off all electrical consumers.
Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.

INC-940 Initial Setup performed (Dealer Number, Date/Time) INC-940 Instruction Manual.
General Information reviewed → General Information
Open hood or lid as applicable to starter or accessory battery or remote terminal locations.
Visual inspection performed → Visual Inspection

Determine starter or accessory battery type "Regular" (conventional lead-acid) or "Special" (AGM).
Battery temperature must be minimum 10 ° C (50 ° F).
Close all vehicle doors.
INC-940 Instruction Manual available.

NOTE:

AGM batteries are identified by the battery housing having three cylindrical-shapes on each side of the housing, or via "AGM" stated on battery label.

Charging and Analysis, Initiating

Connect INC-940 to grounded 115V AC receptacle.

All Models except Eos with 3.2L and Dual Battery System

Connect charger positive (red) clamp to the batterys positive (ost or remote terminal, and the negative (black) clamp to the battery negative (ost or remote terminal. Charger leads must be securely fastened and make proper contact with the battery terminals or remote terminals.

Connect charger positive (red) clamp to the left batterys positive (erminal - 1 - and the negative (black) clamp to the right batterys negative (erminal - 5 -. Charger leads must be securely fastened and make proper contact with the battery terminals.

All Models, Continued

Press INC-940 power switch to "ON" position.
Choose charge mode "AUTOMATIC" or "Manual". Additional details (charge mode dependent) INC-940 Instruction Manual

NOTE:

Should the starter battery (only) on Touareg with V6 and V8 engines be charged via the remote location terminals, and the "Manual" charge mode be selected, enter the reduced DIN rating of 270.
Should the accessory battery (only) on Touareg with V10 TDI engines be charged via the remote location terminals, and the "Manual" charge mode be selected, enter the reduced DIN rating of 295.
Should the dual batteries on Eos models with 3.2L engine be charged in "Manual" charge mode, use the DIN value of a single battery (example: 380A). Do not double or halve the DIN rating when entering into INC-940.

Choose test "IN VEHICLE" or "OUT OF VEHICLE".
Choose battery type: "REGULAR" or "SPECIAL" (AGM) as applicable.
Choose test type: "WARRANTY", r "OTHER". Note additional details (test type dependent) INC-940 Instruction Manual.

The INC-940 tests/analyses the battery and initiates the charging process accordingly. The display shows one of three results with the approximate charge time as applicable:

Result	Explanation
GOOD BATTERY	Analysis finds the battery to be good. Battery can return to service.
CHARGING REQUIRED	Analysis finds the battery to have a low state of charge. INC-940 will display an approximate charge time and begin the charging process. The accumulated CCA and remaining charging time are displayed and updated at intervals.
REPLACE BATTERY	Analysis finds battery to be bad. Charging process stopped. Replace battery.

NOTE:

CAUTION: Should battery begin gassing violently, abort charging process by pressing STOP button on front panel.

Charging and Analysis, Completion

On completion of charging and analysis procedure, the INC-940 will display "GOOD BATTERY" or "REPLACE BATTERY" and the total charge time.

Depending on individual cases (example: printed copy for warranty requirements, customer or shop administration), three information options are now available:

GENERATE TEST CODE (feature only available after "AUTOMATIC" charge and analysis).
PRINT LAST TEST RESULTS (required for warranty purposes as applicable).
VIEW LAST TEST RESULTS
