Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Scan tool V.A.G 1551 or mobile scan tool V.A.G 1552 and cable V.A.G 1551/3
- Wiring diagram
Test sequence
- Connect scan tool V.A.G 1551 (VAG 1552) and select control module for engine electronics with "address word" 01. For this, the ignition must be switched on: Refer to 01 ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) from M.Y. 99-01 or 01 ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) from M.Y. 2002 and on
Scan tool display:
Quick data transfer HELP Select function XX
- Press buttons 0 and 8 for the function "Reading measuring value blocks" and press Q button to confirm input.
Scan tool display:
Read measuring value block HELP Enter display group number XXX
- Press buttons 0 0 and 2 for the "Display group number 2" and press Q button to confirm input.
- Check the reading of the throttle position in display field 2. Do NOT depress the accelerator pedal. Specification: 0.0%
Read measuring value block 2 0/min 0.0% 0 1 0 18.4 ° C
- Also, check the reading for the idle switch in display field 3. The center digit must be set at 1. Reading: 010
- Slowly depress accelerator pedal and observe display fields 2 and 3.
Read measuring value block 2 0/min 100.0% 0 0 0 18.4
- Display field 2: Throttle position value must increase continuously. Specified value for wide open throttle position: 100%
- Display field 3: The center digit must change to 0. Reading: 000
NOTE:
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, the pressure point of the kick down switch must be felt before reaching the fully depressed accelerator pedal position.
If final specification is not obtained:
- Press → button.
- Press buttons 0 and 6 for the function "End data transfer" and press Q button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.
- Adjust throttle position sensor G79. Refer to Adjusting Throttle Position (TP) sensor .
If reading does not change or only temporarily:
- Check throttle position sensor G79 as follows:
- Press → button
- Press buttons 0 and 6 for the function "End data transfer" and press Q button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.
- Disconnect 6-pin harness connector for throttle position sensor G79.
- Measure resistance of sensor between terminals 1 + 3 of connector. Specification: Throttle in idle position: 0.8 to 1.4 kΩ
- Measure resistance of sensor between terminals 2 + 3 of connector. Specification: Throttle in idle position: 0.8 to 1.4 kΩ
- Check Closed Throttle Position (CTP) Switch F60 in throttle position sensor. For this, measure resistance between terminals 4 + 6 of connector. Specification: Throttle in idle position: 0.8 to 1.2 kΩ. Accelerator pedal depressed: ∞ Ω
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Measure resistance of sensor between terminals 5 + 6 of connector. Specification: Throttle in idle position: ∞ Ω Accelerator pedal depressed: 0.8 to 1.2 kΩ
Continue for all vehicles
If specifications are not obtained:
- Replace Throttle Position (TP) Sensor G79. Item.
If specified values are achieved:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/22 to control module wiring harness.
- Check for open circuits in wires between test box and connector according to wiring diagram. Terminal 1 + Socket 24 Terminal 2 + Socket 11 Terminal 3 + Socket 23 Terminal 4 + Socket 12 Terminal 6 + Socket 25. Vehicles with automatic transmission Terminal 5 + Socket 8 Harness resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+. Specification: ∞ Ω
If no malfunction is detected in the wiring:
- Replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) J248. Refer to 23 DIESEL FUEL INJECTION for M.Y. 99-01, or 23 DIESEL FUEL INJECTION from M.Y. 2002 and on
