Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 25 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
  • All the possible DTCs which are recognized by the Transmission Control Module -J217- and displayed on the VAG 1551 Scan Tool with the printer switched on, are listed below grouped according to the DTC number.
  • If malfunctions occur only occasionally or if the DTC memory was not erased after correcting the malfunctions, these will be displayed as "sporadic malfunctions" for a stipulated period of time: see MALFUNCTIONS WHICH MAY LEAD TO EMERGENCY RUNNING: .
  • If components are indicated as being faulty when the DTC memory is checked, additionally test wiring to the components for short and open circuits according to the wiring diagram.
  • The and the type of malfunction in numbers is printed out in the "rapid data transfer" mode only when the printer of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool is switched on.

    Example: DTC (5-digit) 65535 XYZ (type of DTC, 3 digits - this 3 -digit indicator is not covered in the table)

  • With the 7.0 program card, the DTC type is described in text below the affected component.

No DTC recognized! If "No DTC recognized" appears after performing repairs, OBD is completed.
If the automatic transmission does not operate properly after checking DTC memory and correcting any malfunctions:

(1) A faulty Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93- is indicated.

(2) Check connections for contact corrosion or water ingress and replace if necessary. If solenoid malfunctions are displayed then check 10 -pin connector on transmission between valve body conductor strip and wiring harness.
DTC 00518

Throttle Position (TP) Sensor -G69-
Signal outside tolerance		 Open or short circuit
Engine control module -J220- or Throttle position (TP) sensor -G69- faulty
On 6 cylinder or diesel engine vehicles, TP sensor -G69- signal is transmitted via the ECM to the TCM. It can only be checked in measuring value block. If a faulty TP sensor is indicated, then check ECM.
  • If DTC 00638 is displayed, correct first
  • Check wiring and connections according to wiring diagram.
  • See READ MEASURING VALUE BLOCK (FUNCTION 08) ; display group numbers 001 and 003
  • Check ECM. See appropriate fuel injection On Board Diagnostic (OBD) article.
  • Replace Throttle Position Sensor -G69- or Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-

    See appropriate Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) article

    See appropriate Diesel Fuel Injection article

  • See BASIC SETTING, INITIATING (FUNCTION 04) 
DTC 00529 & 00532

Signal too large		 Transmission becomes too hot, max. 148 C (298 F). If ATF temperature is too high, transmission shifts down into next lower gear.
Trailer load of vehicle too high

NOTE: Do not replace Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- (see ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS, LOCATION ), or return the system to its basic setting (see BASIC SETTING, INITIATING (FUNCTION 04) ), until the possible cause of any malfunction has been determined and the following types of malfunctions have been corrected:
