Exhaust Flap Valve 1 (vehicles with engine code BJS), checking: Notes

Function
Exhaust Flap Valve 1 -N321- is activated by Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- depending on vehicle speed and the exhaust flap in rear muffler opens and closes via the vacuum control unit.
Exhaust flap is opened from a vehicle driving speed of approx. 60 km/h. When the speed is not reached, the exhaust flap is closed again.
Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram
Test requirements
- The respective fuses of Exhaust Flap Valve 1 -N321- must be OK:
Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
- Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.
- Ignition switched off.
Test sequence
- Disconnect 2-pin connector from Exhaust Flap Valve 1 -N321-.
- Check resistance between terminals of solenoid valve.
Specified value: 31.5 to 38.5 Ω
If specified value is not obtained:
- Replace Exhaust Flap Valve 1 -N321-. Refer to Individual components of vacuum control unit .
- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM). Refer to Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data
- Generate readiness code. Refer to Readiness code, generating
If specified value is obtained:
- Check wires to control module according to wiring diagram. Refer to Check wires to control module .
