Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (function 03)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III, 1995 Volkswagen Golf III, 1995 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1994 Volkswagen Jetta III, and 1994 Volkswagen Golf III. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
When performing Output DTM on this vehicle, the last DTM that was displayed will be stored in the Motronic ECM and that display will be first to appear the next time this mode is activated. It does not automatically go to beginning of the sequence.
The following components are checked in the Output DTM sequence.
- - Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector (N30)
- - Cylinder 3 Fuel Injector (N32)
- - Cylinder 4 Fuel Injector (N33)
- - Cylinder 2 Fuel Injector (N31)
- - Idle Air Control Valve (N71)
- - EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
- - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Relay (J278)
- - EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve (N18) (a two-way valve)
- - DISREGARD DISPLAY, NOT APPLICABLE
- Connect the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) using adapter harness.
- 1993 m.y. See VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), connecting (1993 m.y.)
- Starting 1994 m.y. See VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL (ST), CONNECTING (STARTING 1994 M.Y.)
- Switch ignition ON.
- Operate the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) while observing the display.
- Press PRINT button.
- Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to enter address word 01 for "Engine Electronics".
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to enter address word 01 for "Engine Electronics".
- Press --> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select the "Check DTC Memory" function.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select the "Erase DTC Memory" function.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press --> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -3- for "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function.
Indicated on display
To activate Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector (N30):
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display
- If anything else appears in the display: press --> button until "Select function XX" appears.
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to enter the "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function again.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Open throttle and close.
- Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector (N30) must click.
NOTE:
The Fuel Injectors click very softly. Be sure that there is no other source of noise in the vicinity when checking.
- Open and close throttle again.
- Press --> button.
If one or more of the valves does not click:
- Perform electrical testing. See ELECTRICAL TESTING , test steps 12-- 15; if necessary, replace Motronic Engine Control Module (J220).
To activate Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve (N71):
- Skip the individual checks for Fuel Injector nos. 3, 4, and 2.
- Press --> button repeatedly until next display appears.

The IAC Valve (N71) must pulsate (noticeably) until the next test in the DTM sequence is selected by pressing the --> button.
NOTE:
If the following components or wires to these components are faulty, the IAC Valve (N71) will only pulsate if the ignition is not switched off after erasing the DTC Memory.
- Fuel Injectors (N30 - N33)
- Solenoid Valve 1 for EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
- EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve (N18)
If the IAC Valve (N71) does not pulsate:
- Perform electrical testing. See ELECTRICAL TESTING , test step 25; if necessary replace Motronic Engine Control Module (J220).
To activate EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80):
- Press --> button.
Indicated on display
- The solenoid (on the Air Cleaner Housing) must click until the next test in the DTM sequence is selected by pressing the -->button.
If the solenoid valve does not click:
- Disconnect connector -1- from valve -2- and connect US 1115 LED tester to the disconnected connector with adapter leads from VW 1594. The LED must blink.
If YES:
- Replace solenoid.
If NO:
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Reconnect connector to N80.
- Perform electrical testing. See ELECTRICAL TESTING , test step 16; if necessary replace Motronic Engine Control Module (J220).
- To activate HO2S Relay (J278):
Press --> button.
Indicated on display
- HO2S Relay (J278) (on fuse/relay panel) must click until the next test in the DTM sequence is selected by pressing the button.
If relay does not click:
- Check electrical wiring according to wiring diagram
To activate EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve (N18, two-way valve):
- Press --> button.
Indicated on display
- The EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve (N18 two - way valve) must click until the next test in the DTM sequence is selected by pressing the --> button.
If the two-way valve does not click:
- Disconnect connector -1- from valve -2- and connect VAG 1527 LED tester to the disconnected connector with adapter cable from VAG 1594.
- The LED must blink.
If YES:
- Replace EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve (N18, two-way valve).
If NO:
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Reconnect connector to Valve N18.
- Perform electrical testing. See ELECTRICAL TESTING , test step 29; if necessary replace Motronic Engine Control Module (J220).
- Press --> button.
- Indicated on display
- Disregard display
- Press button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select the "End Output" function.
- Press -Q- to confirm input.
