Cooling system, general information

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 1999 Volkswagen GTI, 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, 1998 Volkswagen GTI, and 1997 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: When the engine is hot, the cooling system is under pressure. If it is necessary to open the cooling system, do so slowly in order to relieve pressure before starting repairs.
NOTE:
  • Hoses are secured with spring-type clamps. When carrying out repairs, use only spring -type clamps.
  • Use commercial clamp pliers, Hazet 798-5 or equivalent, to remove and install spring-type clamps.
  • When installing coolant hoses they should be stress-free, routed so that they do not come into contact with other components (observe markings on coolant connection and hose).

Draining and filling with coolant, see COOLING SYSTEM, DRAINING AND FILLING

Coolant mixture ratios, see COOLANT MIXTURE RATIOS

For leak tests of cooling system use VAG 1274 cooling system tester and VAG 1274/3 adapter.
