Lubrication system, overview: Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 1999 Volkswagen GTI, 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, 1998 Volkswagen GTI, and 1997 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: If large amounts of metal shavings or small metal particles are found in the engine oil, caused by wear of crankshaft and connecting rod bearings, thoroughly clean the engine oil passages to remove contaminants and help prevent further engine damage. Oil spray nozzles, oil non-return valve and oil cooler cannot be sufficiently cleaned and must be replaced. Oil level must NOT exceed MAX mark on dipstick. If this level is exceeded (too much oil) there is danger of damaging the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).

OIL SYSTEM CAPACITY 

Engine oil specifications (see Owner's Manual)

The following terms must appear on the oil container singly or in combination with other designations: VW 502 00 or VW500 00 or VW501 01, ACEA A2 or ACEA A3, or API-SJ or API-SL.

Engine oils are graded according to their viscosity. The proper grade to be used depends on existing climatic or seasonal conditions.

The original oil has a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-40. This oil can be used over all temperature ranges for normal driving. If engine oil viscosity grade SAE 5W-40 is not available, use SAE 5W-30.

The following list pertains to Fig 1.

  1. 10 Nm (7 ft lb) 
  2. Cover 
    • For oil pump drive -4-
  3. O-ring 
    • Always replace
    • Lubricate with oil before installing
  4. Oil pump drive 
  5. Intermediate shaft 
  6. Thrust washer 
  7. 10 Nm (7 ft lb) 
    • Install with locking fluid "D6"
  8. Oil pump 
  9. 25 Nm (18 ft lb) 
  10. 10 Nm (7 ft lb) 
    • Always replace
    • Install with locking fluid "D6"
  11. Oil drain plug 
    • Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
    • Replace if leaking. See Parts Catalog for correct application. In some cases, seal and drain plug are combined; do not interchange with separate seal and drain plug.
  12. Seal 
    • Always replace
  13. - Oil spray nozzle 
  14. 15 Nm (11 ft lb) 
  15. Gasket 
    • Always replace (except rubber version)
    • Replace rubber version only if damaged
    • Before mounting gasket coat oil pan flange and cylinder block flange with "D2"
  16. Oil pan 
    • Clean sealing surface before installing
  17. Oil cooler 
    • Coat contact area to flange, outside the seal, with AMV 188 100 02 sealant
    • Ensure clearance to adjacent components
    • Cleaning/replacing, see Caution in LUBRICATION SYSTEM, OVERVIEW 
  18. Oil cooler cover 
    • Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
  19. Gasket 
    • Always replace
    • Note installation position
    • Lubricate with oil before installing
  20. Oil filter housing 
  21. Dipstick 
    • Oil level must not be above the max. mark
  22. Guide tube 
    • Secure with bolt to lower intake manifold
  23. Oil non-return valve 
    • Tightening torque: 5 Nm (44 in lb)
    • Note installation position
    • Clean if badly soiled
    • Cleaning/replacing, see Caution in LUBRICATION SYSTEM, OVERVIEW
