Camshafts, removing and installing: Installing

Oil running surfaces of both camshafts.

NOTE:

Observe marking for double chain direction of rotation!
When installing the camshafts the recess for aligning the camshaft sprockets -arrows- must be at the top. See Fig 1.
When installing camshaft bearing caps, make sure that the identification mark is readable from the exhaust side of cylinder head and that the arrow on each cap points toward the vibration damper end.

Camshaft for cylinders 1, 3 and 5:

Slowly tighten bearing caps -3- and -5-. Alternate diagonally to tighten caps evenly.
Install bearing caps -1- and -7- and tighten.
- Tightening torque: 20 Nm (18 ft lb)

Camshaft for cylinders 2, 4 and 6

Slowly tighten bearing caps -2- and -6-. Alternate diagonally to tighten caps evenly.
Install bearing cap -4- and tighten.
- Tightening torque: 20 Nm (18 ft lb)
Clean sealing surfaces of camshaft sprocket cover and cylinder head.
Remove old sealant from 3 mm holes in cylinder head gasket -arrows-.

NOTE: With the cylinder head installed, the holes in the cylinder head gasket are only half visible.

Install camshaft sprockets with double chain, See VALVE TIMING, ADJUSTING (ENGINE REMOVED) .
Fill 3 mm holes in cylinder head gasket with AMV 188 001 02 sealant.
Coat sealing surfaces of camshaft sprocket cover with AMV 188 001 02 sealant.
Oil O-ring (item - 13 -) and insert in camshaft sprocket cover.
Install camshaft sprocket cover, insert old mounting bolts until they are finger-tight.
First tighten M8 mounting bolts.
- Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
Tighten M6 mounting bolts.
- Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
Install chain tensioner for double chain.
- Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft lb)

NOTE: If the chain tensioner has been pulled apart, bleed chain tensioner before installing: see PART I .

CAUTION: DO NOT start the engine for approx. 30 minutes after new hydraulic valve lifters have been installed. New hydraulic lifters are at maximum height and must be allowed time to bleed down or the valves will strike the pistons.
