Valve stem seals, replacing (cylinder head installed)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 26 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Remove camshaft, see CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Remove valve lifters (do not interchange).
Store lifters with camshaft contact surface down.
Remove spark plugs.
Turn crankshaft to move piston to Bottom Dead Center (BDC) position.
Install tool 2036 and adjust bar to cylinder stud height.
Install pressure hose VW653/3 in spark plug hole and apply steady pressure.
Specification: at least 6 bar (87 psi)

Remove valve springs with valve lever VW541/1A and bar VW541/5.

NOTE: Tight valve keepers can be loosened with light taps on the tool lever.

Pull out valve shaft seals with 3047A.
Slide plastic seal protector -A- onto valve stem to prevent damage to new seals.
Lubricate seal -B-.
Carefully push seal onto valve stem using appropriate tool:
- Golf, Jetta: tool US 5042
- Cabrio: tool 3129
