Hydraulic valve lifters, checking
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 26 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
- Replace valve lifters only as complete units (can not be adjusted or repaired).
- Irregular valve noise during start up is normal.
Valve lifters cannot be adjusted. Noisy valve lifters may be replaced after the following checks:
- Run engine until radiator fan comes on at least once.
- Increase engine speed to approx. 2500 RPM for two minutes.
CAUTION:
After installing new valve lifters, DO NOT start engine for approx. 30 minutes to allow lifters to bleed down. Otherwise valves may hit piston crown.
If lifters are still noisy, locate faulty lifters as follows:
- Remove upper intake manifold and cylinder head cover.
- Turn crankshaft with crankshaft drive belt sprocket bolt in clockwise direction until cam lobe for lifter to be checked faces up.
- Press down with suitable wood stick against valve lifter.
- If lifter can be pushed down more than 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) before valve opens, replace valve lifter.
