WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 21 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio, 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1999 Volkswagen Golf. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The differential must be adjusted if one or more of the following are replaced:
- Transmission housing
- Clutch housing
- Differential
- Differential tapered roller bearing
Adjustment summary, see ADJUSTMENT SUMMARY .
- Drive tapered roller bearing outer race (opposite gear side) along with shim S2 (1 mm thick), into clutch housing.
NOTE:
Shim S2 is always 1 mm thick.
CAUTION:
The inner and outer races of the tapered roller bearings are a matched set and cannot be interchanged.
- Drive tapered roller bearing outer race (gear side) into transmission housing without shim.
- Install differential gears in clutch housing.
- Install transmission housing (with gasket) with only 5 bolts.
Tightening torque: 25 N.m (18 ft lb)
- Set up dial indicator and zero with 1 mm preload.
- Move differential assembly up and down and record axial play indicated by dial indicator.
Example: 0.90 mm
CAUTION:
Do not rotate the differential during the measurement as this will cause the bearings to settle, which will result in incorrect reading.
