Work sequence
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, 1997 Volkswagen Passat, 1997 Volkswagen Jetta, and 1996 Volkswagen Passat. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Open ashtray and remove, then slide cover for Data Link Connector (DLC) to left (arrow).
- Connect scan tool using VAG1551/3 adapter cable.
Depending upon the desired function:
- Switch ignition on, or start engine.

- Operate scan tool according to directions on display.
- Press -1- button to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.
- Press button -3- twice to select "OBD II" address word 33.

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Press buttons -4- and -1- to select "Mode 41."

NOTE:
- Diagnostic data must be checked in sequence by pressing the --> button; you can also print them out using the PRINT button.
- Various displays will be called up when using the --> button, but they have no relevance for this procedure.
- Press ==> button.

- Check to see that "PID 1" is displayed on first line, and note display field 4 on second line.
NOTE:
If the fourth number block indicates a 1, the corresponding diagnostic step has not been carried out, and the readiness code must be created, see READINESS CODE, SETTING (UP TO M.Y. 1997) .
