On Board Diagnostic (OBD) from 09.94 and up: Function

The Airbag Control Module -J234- is located behind the console on the tunnel. It is equipped with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. On Board Diagnostic (OBD) connections are behind the cover below the heating and ventilation controls.

The Airbag Control Module -J234- detects system malfunctions as DTCs and stores them in permanent memory.

DTCs which can be attributed to a temporary open circuit in the wiring or loose contact, will also be stored. They will be displayed as sporadic (SP) DTCs.

After the ignition is switched on, Airbag Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) -K75- comes on for about 4 seconds and goes out again. If it flashes for an additional 15 seconds the front passenger airbag is blocked.

When starting DTC checking initiate On Board Diagnostic.

Stored information must be checked with VAG 1551 (ST) and VAS 5056 test box to determine which components are inoperative.

Displayed DTC information is used to refer to a DTC table with notes on possible causes for corrective action.

WARNING:
  • Check airbag system wiring by visual inspection only.
  • Do not test continuity or resistance of the airbag igniter circuits.
  • Switch off ignition before checking routing of wiring.
