On-Vehicle Inspection [08/2015 - 08/2018]: Procedure

  1. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION AND FOR FUEL LEAK 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
      NOTE:

      Do not start the engine.

    3. Turn the Techstream main switch on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Fuel Pump / Speed.
    5. Check the fuel pump operation.
      1. Check for pressure in the fuel inlet tube from the fuel line. Check that the sound of fuel flowing in the fuel tank can be heard.

        If there is no sound, check the integration relay, fuel pump, ECM and wiring connector.

    6. Check for fuel leaks.
      1. Check that there are no fuel leaks after performing maintenance anywhere on the system.

        If there are fuel leaks, repair or replace parts as necessary.

  2. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE 
    1. Check that the battery voltage is 11 to 14 V.
    2. Perform the "Discharge Fuel System Pressure" procedures (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    3. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
      NOTE:

      When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2015 - 08/2017] Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2017 - 08/2018] ).

    4. Remove the fuel pipe clamp from the fuel tube connector.

    5. Disconnect the No. 1 fuel pipe sub-assembly (for quick type B) (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    6. Install SST (pressure gauge) as shown in the illustration.

      • SST: 09268-45101

    7. Wipe off any gasoline.
    8. Reconnect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.
    9. Operate the fuel pump.
      1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
      2. Start the engine.
      3. Turn the Techstream main switch on.
      4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the Fuel Pressure Switching Valve / High.
      5. Measure the fuel pressure.

        Standard fuel pressure

        370 to 430 kPa (3.77 to 4.38 kgf/cm2 , 53.7 to 62.4 psi)

        If the pressure is higher than the specification, replace the fuel pressure regulator (for high pressure).

        If the pressure is below the specification, check the fuel hoses and connections, fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator (for high pressure), fuel pressure switching valve, and fuel tubes for clogs.

      6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the Fuel Pressure Switching Valve / Low.
      7. Measure the fuel pressure.

        Standard fuel pressure

        270 to 330 kPa (2.75 to 3.37 kgf/cm2 , 39.2 to 47.9 psi)

        If the pressure is higher than the specification, check the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure switching valve.

        If the pressure is below the specification, check the fuel hoses and connections, fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator, and fuel tubes for clogs.

    10. Stop the engine.
    11. Check that the fuel pressure remains as specified for 5 minutes after the engine has stopped.

      Standard fuel pressure

      147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2 , 21 psi) or more

      If the pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injectors.

    12. After checking the fuel pressure, disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal and carefully remove SST and the fuel tube connector to prevent gasoline from spraying.
    13. Reconnect the No. 1 fuel pipe sub-assembly (for quick type B) (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    14. Check for fuel leaks.
      1. Check that there are no fuel leaks after performing maintenance anywhere on the system.

        If there are fuel leaks, repair or replace parts as necessary.

  3. INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE SWITCHING VALVE OPERATION 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and warm it up.
    3. Turn the Techstream main switch on.
    4. Check the "Short FT" value in the Data List before and after activating the fuel pressure switching valve by performing the Active Test.

      HINT: 

      • Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the Fuel Pressure Switching Valve.
      • Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Short FT.

      Standard value

      When comparing before and after activating the fuel pressure switching valve, the "Short FT" value in the Data List changes by 10% or more.

      If the value is outside the standard, perform a fuel pressure inspection. There may be an operation malfunction or clog in the fuel pressure switching valve, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure regulator (for high pressure) or fuel tubes.

  4. MEASURE ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION 
    1. Discharge fuel system pressure (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
    2. Measure the alcohol concentration.

      HINT: 

      Prepare a graduated cylinder beforehand.

        Disconnect the No. 1 fuel pipe from the No. 2 fuel delivery pipe (for quick type B) (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).

      2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
      3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
        NOTE:

        Do not start the engine.

      4. Turn the Techstream on.
      5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Fuel Pump / Speed.
      6. Add 100 cc (6.1 cu. in.) of fuel to a graduated cylinder and turn the Techstream off.
      7. Connect the No. 1 fuel pipe to the No. 2 fuel delivery pipe (for quick type B) (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - 08/2018] ).
      8. Add 100 cc (6.1 cu. in.) of water to the graduated cylinder, and then mix the mixture using a screwdriver.
      9. Since the alcohol in the fuel blends with the water forming two layers, a E0 gasoline layer and an aqueous alcohol solution layer, determine the alcohol concentration based on the amount of alcohol in 100 cc (6.1 cu. in.) of fuel.

        HINT: 

        ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION (WHEN 100 CC (6.1 CU. IN.) OF FUEL IS MIXED WITH 100 CC (6.1 CU. IN.) OF WATER)

        Boundary Line Alcohol Concentration
        120 cc (7.3 cu. in.) 20 %
        150 cc (9.2 cu. in.) 50 %
        190 cc (11.6 cu. in.) 90 %
    3. Inspect for fuel leak (Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 11 ).
  5. FUEL DENSITY LEARNING VALUE RESET 
    1. If the alcohol concentration of the fuel is changed, initialization and learning is required (Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2015 - 08/2017] Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2017 - 08/2018] ).
