Removal [08/2019 - ]: Procedure

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    NOTE:

    When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] ).

  2. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX ASSEMBLY (for VF2A) 

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2019 - ] )

  3. REMOVE NO. 1 SHIFT AND SELECT LEVER BOOT (for VF2A) 
    1. Remove the 4 screws and No. 1 shift and select lever boot.

  4. REMOVE TRANSFER HIGH AND LOW SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY (for VF2A) 
    1. Fold back the transfer front drive shift boot.
    2. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the snap ring and pull out the transfer high and low shift lever assembly.

  5. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 11 )

  6. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 13 )

  7. REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH 

    (Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 15 )

  8. REMOVE FRONT NO. 1 FENDER APRON TO FRAME SEAL RH 

    (Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 17 )

  9. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 

    (See step  1)

  10. REMOVE TRANSFER CASE LOWER PROTECTOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and transfer case lower protector.

  11. REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] )

  12. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] )

  13. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] )

  14. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the nut and clip, and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket.
  15. DISCONNECT NO. 1 INLET OIL COOLER TUBE AND NO. 1 OUTLET OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts to disconnect the 2 clamps.

    2. Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the No. 1 inlet oil cooler tube and No. 1 outlet oil cooler tube from each oil cooler tube union.
  16. REMOVE MANIFOLD STAY 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and the manifold stay.

  17. REMOVE NO. 2 MANIFOLD STAY 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and the No. 2 manifold stay.

  18. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] )

  19. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Remove the flywheel housing side cover.

  20. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER SETTING BOLT 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the 6 drive plate and torque converter setting bolts and remove each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley setting bolt with a wrench.

  21. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

    1. Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack. Lift the automatic transmission assembly slightly from the crossmember.
  22. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET LH AND RH (for X-Runner) 
    1. Remove the 8 bolts and front suspension member bracket LH and RH.

  23. REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts of the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator.

    2. Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts and No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly.

      HINT: 

      Hold the bolts and loosen the nuts.

  24. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

    1. Remove the bolt and rear engine mounting heat insulator.
    2. Remove the 4 bolts and rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.
  25. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Tilt the automatic transmission assembly downward.

      NOTE:

      Make sure the cooling fan does not contact the fan shroud.

    2. for VF4BM:
      1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors and transfer control side connectors.

        HINT: 

        Detach the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

      2. Detach the 2 connector clamps and 7 harness clamps, and disconnect the wire harness.
    3. for VF2CM:
      1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors, transfer control side.

        HINT: 

        Detach the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

      2. Remove the bolt, detach the 7 wire harness clamps and disconnect the engine wire from the automatic transmission assembly and transfer assembly.
    4. for VF2A:
      1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors and 3 transfer connectors.

        HINT: 

        Detach the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

      2. Detach the 2 connector clamps and 5 harness clamps, and disconnect the wire harness.
  26. DISCONNECT BREATHER HOSE 
    1. Disconnect the 3 breather hoses from the engine assembly.

  27. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly.

      NOTE:

      Do not use excess force when prying the automatic transmission assembly.

  28. REMOVE TRANSFER ASSEMBLY 
  29. REMOVE NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and No. 1 transmission control cable bracket.

  30. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the torque converter assembly from automatic transmission assembly.
      NOTE:

      Remove the torque converter assembly horizontally from the input shaft.

  31. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY 

    (Refer to INSPECTION [08/2015 - ] )
