Speed Signal Circuit: Procedure

  1. INSPECT ECU TERMINAL VOLTAGE (INPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the E1 connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E1-9 (+S) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

      HINT: 

      If any of the ECUs specified in the wiring diagram supplied power to the combination meter, the combination meter will output a waveform.

    NG → See step   5 

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. INSPECT COMBINATION METER (OUTPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Reconnect the E1 connector.
    2. Disconnect the A24 connector.

    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A24-11 (SP1) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V

    NG → See step   4 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT SKID CONTROL ECU (INPUT WAVEFORM) 
    1. Check the input waveform.

      1. Reconnect the A24 connector.
      2. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connector(s) still connected.
      3. Connect the oscilloscope to terminals E1-29 (SI) and body ground.
      4. Ignition switch on (IG).
      5. Turn the wheel slowly.
      6. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.
        Item Condition
        Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms./DIV.
        Vehicle condition Driving at approx. 20 km/h (12 mph)

        OK

        The waveform is displayed as shown in the illustration.

        HINT: 

        When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.

    NG → See step   14 

    OK → See step   13 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - SKID CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the E1 connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A24-11 (SP1) - E1-29 (SI) Always Below 1 Ω
      A24-11 (SP1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   13 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - JUNCTION CONNECTOR) 
    1. Disconnect the junction connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E1-9 (+S) - E24-6 Always Below 1 Ω
      E1-9 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (JUNCTION CONNECTOR) 
    1. Inspect for a short in the circuit that is connected to the junction connector shown in the wiring diagram.

      HINT: 

      If voltage is not present, the circuit (ECU) was possibly the malfunctioning circuit. This is the circuit that will be diagnosed by following the A step that follows.

      1. Disconnect the junction connectors.
      2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard voltage

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        D53-5 (*1) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
        D53-6 (*2) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
        E24-7 (*3) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
        E24-7 (*4) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
        E24-5 (*5) - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
        D53-7 - Body ground Ignition switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

        *1: w/ Smart Key System

        *2: w/ Tire Pressure Warning System

        *3: w/o Navigation System

        *4: w/ Navigation System

        *5: w/ Back Door Speaker

        Result

        Result Proceed to
        Voltage is not present in one circuit. A
        Voltage is present in all the circuits. B

    B → REPLACE JUNCTION CONNECTOR 

    A: Go to next step 

  7. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Select the circuit that did not present the voltage in the step 6.

      Result

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MAIN BODY ECU CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the D9 (*1) connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D9-9 (SPD) (*1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      *1: w/ Smart Key System

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPLACE MAIN BODY ECU 

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM CIRCUIT, TCM CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the B52 (*1), D61 (*2), or D60 (*3) connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B52-3 (SPD) (*1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      D61-18 (SPD) (*2) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      D60-29 (SPD) (*3) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      *1: for U760E Automatic Transaxle System

      *2: for 2GR-FE

      *3: for 1AR-FE

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (RADIO RECEIVER CIRCUIT, NAVIGATION RECEIVER CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the E3 (*1) or E5 (*2) connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E3-3 (SPD) (*1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E5-3 (SPD) (*2) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      *1: w/o Navigation System

      *2: w/ Navigation System

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the N14 (*1) connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      N14-11 (SPD) (*1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      *1: w/ Back Door Speaker

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   20 

  12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (TIRE PRESSURE WARNING ECU CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the D33 (*1) connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D33-2 (SPD) (*1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      *1: w/ Tire Pressure Warning System

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   21 

  13. REPLACE COMBINATION METER. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  14. REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  15. REPLACE ECM (for 2GR-FE). Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 7 
  16. REPLACE ECM (for 1AR-FE). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  17. REPLACE TCM (for U760E). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  18. REPLACE RADIO RECEIVER. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  19. REPLACE NAVIGATION RECEIVER. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 6 
  20. REPLACE STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 14 
  21. REPLACE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 6
