Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

HINT:

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Turn the A/C switch on.
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain/Engine/Active Test/Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1).
    6. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) using the Techstream.

      Result 

      TECHSTREAM OPERATION CHART

      Techstream Operation Specified Condition
      0% (OFF) Normal engine speed
      127% (ON) Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after camshaft timing oil control valve assembly switched from OFF to ON)

      HINT:

      If the result is not acceptable, cool the engine and perform the Active Test again.

    7. Start the engine when the engine coolant temperature is 30°C (86°F) or less.
    8. Turn the Techstream on.
    9. Turn the A/C switch on.
    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain/Engine/Active Test/Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1).
    11. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) using the Techstream when the engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less.

      Result 

      TECHSTREAM OPERATION CHART

      Techstream Operation Specified Condition
      0% (OFF) Normal engine speed
      127% (ON) Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after camshaft timing oil control valve assembly switched from OFF to ON)

      NG: Go to step 2 

      OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )

  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) 
    1. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft).
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 Ω

    3. Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1 and connect the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      OK: 

      Valve moves quickly. 

    4. Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft).

      NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT)  (See REMOVAL )

      OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B64-1 - B50-25 (OE1+) Always Below 1 Ω
      B64-2 - B50-19 (OE1-) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B64-1 or B50-25 (OE1+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B64-2 or B50-19 (OE1-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

      NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM)

      OK: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )
