Engine Mechanical (1ZZ-FE): Camshaft: Removal

  1. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
  2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 
  3. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER NO.2 
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover No. 2 (See )REMOVAL .
  4. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the ignition coil assembly (See REMOVAL ).
  5. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly (See )REMOVAL .
  6. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC / COMPRESSION 
    1. Set the No. 1 cylinder to the TDC/compression (See )REMOVAL .
  7. REMOVE NO.2 CAMSHAFT 
    1. Place matchmarks on the timing chain and camshaft timing gears as illustrated.

    2. Remove the 2 nuts, then remove the chain tensioner.
      NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft without the chain tensioner.

    3. While holding the camshaft with a wrench, loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt.
      NOTE: Be careful not to damage the valve lifter.

    4. Using several steps, uniformly loosen and remove the 11 bolts in the sequence shown, then remove the 5 bearing caps.

    5. Remove the camshaft timing gear as shown in the illustration.

  8. REMOVE CAMSHAFT 
    1. Using several steps, uniformly loosen and remove the 8 bolts in the sequence shown, then remove the 4 bearing caps.

    2. Remove the camshaft and camshaft timing gear while holding the timing chain by hand.

    3. Tie the timing chain with a string as shown in the illustration.
      NOTE: Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing chain cover.
