Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Toyota Tundra and 2005 Toyota Tundra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing the master cylinder solenoid, perform zero point CALIBRATION  .
  1. Check stop light switch operation. 

    CHECK: 

    Check that the stop light comes on when the brake pedal is depressed and goes off when the brake pedal is released.

    OK: 

    Stop light function is normal. 

    HINT:

    Check the stop light bulb as it may have burnt out.

    1. NG : Go to step   10 . 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  2. Measure voltage between master cylinder solenoid (skid control ECU terminal STP) and body ground. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Disconnect the skid control ECU connector S29.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    SKID CONTROL ECU CONNECTOR S29 STP TERMINAL VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS

    Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
    S29-7 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal depressed 8 to 16 V
    S29-7 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal released Below 1.5 V
    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector (STP circuit). 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  3. Check harness and connector (STP to STP2 circuit). 

    PREPARATION: 

    Disconnect the skid control ECU connector S29.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    SKID CONTROL ECU CONNECTOR S29 RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS

    Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
    S29-7 (STP) - S29-45 (STP2) Always Below 1 Ω

    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector (STP to STP2 circuit). 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  4. Perform ACTIVE TEST by hand-held tester (STOP LIGHT operation relay). 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Select ACTIVE TEST mode on the hand-held tester.
    ACTIVE TEST MODE REFERENCE

    Item Vehicle Condition/Test Details Diagnostic Note
    STOP LIGHT RELAY Turns stop light relay ON/OFF Observe stop light

    CHECK: 

    Check that "ON and OFF" of the stop light can be shown on the rear combination light by the hand-held tester.

    OK: 

    The stop light turns on or off in accordance with the hand-held tester. 

    1. NG : Go to step   6 . 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  5. Reconfirm DTC (See  DTC CHECK / CLEAR   ). 

    PREPARATION: 

    Clear the DTCs.

    CHECK: 

    Check if the same DTCs are detected.

    RESULT: 

    DTC OUTPUT RESULT

    DTC is output A
    DTC is not output B
    1. B : END. 
    2. A : Replace master cylinder solenoid (See  DISASSEMBLY  ). 
  6. Check stop light relay input voltage. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Disconnect the stop light relay from stop light relay terminal S31.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage according to the values in the table below.

    OK: 

    STOP LIGHT RELAY TERMINAL S31 VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS

    Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
    Terminal 5 - Body ground Always 8 to 14 V
    Terminal 1 - Body ground Always 8 to 14 V
    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector (stop light relay power source circuit). 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  7. Inspect stop light relay. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Remove the stop light relay.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    STOP LIGHT RELAY CONTINUITY CONDITIONS

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Terminals 3 and 4 Continuity
    Terminals 3 and 5 No continuity

    PREPARATION: 

    Apply battery voltage between terminals 1 (+) and 2 (-).

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    STOP LIGHT RELAY CONTINUITY CONDITIONS

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Terminals 3 and 4 No continuity
    Terminals 3 and 5 Continuity
    1. NG : Replace stop light relay. 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  8. Measure voltage between master cylinder solenoid (skid control ECU terminal STPO) and body ground. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector S29.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    SKID CONTROL ECU CONNECTOR S29 VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS

    Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
    S29-16 (STPO) - Body ground Brake pedal depressed 10 to 14 V
    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector (STPO circuit). 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  9. Reconfirm DTC (See  DTC CHECK / CLEAR   ). 

    PREPARATION: 

    Clear the DTCs.

    CHECK: 

    Check if the same DTCs are detected.

    RESULT: 

    DTC OUTPUT RESULT

    DTC is output A
    DTC is not output B
    1. B : END. 
    2. A : Replace master cylinder solenoid (See  DISASSEMBLY  ). 
  10. Inspect stop light switch (stop light switch power source terminal voltage). 

    PREPARATION: 

    Disconnect the stop light switch connector S4.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    Access Cab., Standard Cab.:

    S4-2 - Body ground Ignition SW ON 10 to 14 V

    OK: 

    Double Cab.:

    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector (Stop light power source circuit). 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  11. Inspect stop light switch. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Disconnect the stop light switch connector.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    Access Cab., Standard Cab.:

    1. NG : Replace stop light switch. 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  12. Check for open or short circuit in harness and connector between stop light switch and stop light relay. 
    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  13. Inspect stop light relay. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Remove the stop light relay.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    OK: 

    STOP LIGHT RELAY CONTINUITY CONDITIONS

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Terminals 3 and 4 Continuity

    1. NG : Replace stop light relay. 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  14. Check for open or short circuit in harness and connector between stop light relay and stop light. 
    1. NG : Repair or replace harness or connector. 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  15. Check stop light as it may have burnt out. 
    1. NG : Repair or replace stop light. 
    2. OK : END
