Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing the master cylinder solenoid, perform zero point CALIBRATION  .

HINT:

Start the inspection from step 1 when using the hand-held tester and start from step 3 when not using the hand-held tester.

  1. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (MOMENTARY INTERRUPTION OF REAR SPEED SENSOR) (SEE  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS   ) 
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and push the hand-held tester main switch ON.
    3. Select "DATA LIST" mode on the hand-held tester.
      ITEM, MEASUREMENT ITEM/RANGE (DISPLAY), NORMAL CONDITION AND DIAGNOSTIC NOTE

    4. Check for any momentary interruption in the wire harness and connector corresponding to a DTC.

    OK: There are no momentary interruptions. 

    HINT:

    Perform the above inspection before removing the sensor and connector.

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (REAR SPEED SENSOR) 
    ITEM, MEASUREMENT ITEM/RANGE (DISPLAY), NORMAL CONDITION AND DIAGNOSTIC NOTE

    Item Measurement Item/Range (Display) Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
    WHEEL SPD RR Wheel speed sensor (RR) reading /min, 0 mph (0 km/h), max.: 202 mph (326 km/h) Actual wheel speed Similar speed as indicated on speedometer
    WHEEL SPD RL Wheel speed sensor (RL) reading /min.: 0 mph (0 km/h), max.: 202 mph (326 km/h) Actual wheel speed Similar speed as indicated on speedometer
    1. Check that there is no difference between the speed value output from the speed sensor displayed on the hand-held tester and the speed value displayed on the speedometer when driving the vehicle.

    OK: The speed value output from the speed sensor displayed on the hand-held tester is the same as the actual vehicle speed. 

    1. NG: Go to step   4 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. PERFORM TEST MODE (SIGNAL CHECK) (SEE  TEST MODE PROCEDURE   ) 
    1. Check if test mode (signal check) DTCs are detected.

      Result: 

      RESULT DESCRIPTION

      Test mode (signal check) DTC is output A
      Test mode (signal check) DTC is not output B
    1. B: GO to step   9 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. INSPECT REAR SPEED SENSOR INSTALLATION 
    1. Check the speed sensor installation.

      OK: 

      • The installation nut is tightened properly. Torque: 8.3 N.m (85 kgf.cm, 73 in.lbf) 
      • There is no clearance between the sensor and the rear axle.

    1. NG: INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR CORRECTLY OR REPLACE  SPEED SENSOR REAR LH  ) 
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  5. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR TIP 
    1. Remove the SPEED SENSOR REAR LH .
    2. Check the sensor tip.

    OK: 

    No scratches or foreign matter on the sensor tip. 

    1. NG: CLEAN OR REPLACE  SPEED SENSOR REAR LH 
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after cleaning/replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  6. INSPECT REAR SPEED SENSOR AND SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE 
    1. Install the rear speed sensor.
    2. Turn the ignition switch off.
    3. Disconnect the rear speed sensor connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A41 -2 (RR+) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      A41 -1 (RR-) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

      LH: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION LH

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A40-2 (RL+) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      A40-1 (RL-) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

      Skid Control Sensor Wire: 

    5. Disconnect the skid control sensor wire.
    6. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A41 ("A"-2) - A41 ("B"-4) Below 1 Ω
      A41 ("A"-2) - A41 ("B"-3) 10 kΩ or higher
      A41 ("A"-2) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      A41 ("A"-1) - A41 ("B"-3) Below 1 Ω
      A41 ("A"-1) - A41 ("B"-4) 10 kΩ or higher
      A41 ("A"-1) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

      LH: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION LH

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A40 ("A"-2) - A40 ("B"-2) Below 1 Ω
      A40 ("A"-2) - A40 ("B"-1) 10 kΩ or higher
      A40 ("A"-2) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      A40 ("A"-1) - A40 ("B"-1) Below 1 Ω
      A40 ("A"-1) - A40 ("B"-2) 10 kΩ or higher
      A40 ("A"-1) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    1. NG: REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR OR SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE 
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU AND REAR SPEED SENSOR) ( HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING  ) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S28-5 (RR+) - A41 (A-4) (RR+) Below 1 Ω
      S28-5 (RR+) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      S28-19 (RR-) - A41 (A-3) (RR-) Below 1 Ω
      S28-19 (RR-) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

      LH: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION LH

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S28-20 (RL+) - A40 (A-2) (RL+) Below 1 Ω
      S28-20 (RL+) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      S28-6 (RL-) - A40 (A-1) (RL-) Below 1 Ω
      S28-6 (RL-) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  8. INSPECT MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID 
    1. Reconnect the skid control ECU connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard: RH: 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION STANDARD: RH

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    A41 (A-4) (RR+) - Body ground 7.5 to 12 V

    LH: 

    TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION LH

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    A40 (A-2) (RL+) - Body ground 7.5 to 12 V

    1. NG: REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  9. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    2. Drive the vehicle at a speed of approximately 20 mph (32 km/h) or more for 60 seconds or more.
    3. Check if the same pending DTCs are detected (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).

      HINT:

      Reinstall the sensors, connectors, etc. and restore the previous vehicle conditions before rechecking for DTCs.

      Result: 

      RESULT DESCRIPTION (1 OF 2)

      DTC is output A
      DTC is not output (When troubleshooting in accordance with the DTC CHART.) B
      DTC is not output (When troubleshooting in accordance with the PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE.) C
    1. B: END 
    2. C: PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  
    3. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  10. REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Replace the SPEED SENSOR REAR LH .
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).

      NEXT 

  11. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    2. Drive the vehicle at a speed of approximately 20 mph (32 km/h) or more for 60 seconds or more.
    3. Check if the same pending DTCs are detected (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).

      HINT:

      Reinstall the sensors, connectors, etc. and restore the previous vehicle conditions before rechecking for DTCs.

      Result:

      DTC is output A
      DTC is not output B
    1. B: END 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  12. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR ROTOR 
    1. Remove the rear axle bearing assy (see REPLACEMENT ).
    2. Check the sensor rotor.

    OK: 

    No scratches, oil, or foreign matter on the rotors. 

    1. NG: CLEAN OR REPLACE REAR AXLE BEARING ASSY (SPEED SENSOR ROTOR) (see  REPLACEMENT  ) 
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after cleaning/replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (SEE  OVERHAUL  )
