Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If the TOYOTA scan tool is not available, go to next step. If the TOYOTA scan tool is available, connect scan tool to DLC3. See Figure. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Turn scan tool on. Monitor park/neutral position switch, REVERSE, 2ND and LOW signal values on scan tool while moving gearshift lever through "P", "R", "N", "2" and "L" positions. Values should be as specified. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH SIGNAL VALUES table. If values are as specified, replace ECM and retest. If values are not as specified, go to step 3.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position. Access the ECM. Using DVOM, measure voltage by backprobing between specified ECM connector terminal and ground with gearshift lever in specified position. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH VOLTAGE table. See Figure. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step. If voltage is within specification, replace ECM and retest. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Check PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace PNP switch if defective. If PNP switch is okay, check and repair circuit(s) between battery, PNP switch and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If circuits are okay, replace ECM and retest. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
