NORMAL Mode Code Retrieval

NOTE: If there is no DTC in the normal mode, check the pending fault code using the Continuous Test Results function (Mode 7 for SAE J1979) on the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester.

NOTE: Hand-held tester only: When the diagnosis system is switched from the normal mode to the check mode, it erases all DTCs and freeze frame data recorded in the normal mode. So before switching modes, always check the DTCs and freeze frame data and note them down.

NOTE: When simulating a symptom with the OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester) to check the DTCs, use the normal mode. For codes on the DTC chart subject to 2 trip detection logic, perform either of the following actions:

Turn the ignition switch OFF after the symptom is simulated once. Then repeat the simulation process again. When the problem has been simulated twice, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminates and the DTCs are recorded in the Engine Control Module (ECM).
Check the pending fault code using the Continuous Test Results function (Mode 7 for SAE 1979) on the OBD II scan tool.

Prepare the OBD II scan tool (complying with SAE J1978) or hand-held tester and connect the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester to the DLC3. See Figure.
Turn the ignition switch ON and push the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester switch ON.
Use the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to check the DTCs and freeze frame data and write them down. For operating instructions, se the OBD II scan tool's instruction book. If there is no DTC in the normal mode, check the pending fault code using the Continuous Test Results function (Mode 7 for SAE J1979) on the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester. If driveability problem exists and no DTCs are present, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom.
Confirm details of the DTC. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . After checking the DTC, perform appropriate DTC test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .
After repairs for DTC have been completed, DTC must be cleared from the engine control module (ECM). See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Road test vehicle to ensure all symptoms and/or complaints have been repaired.
