Timing Belt: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus LS 430 and 2002 Lexus GS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If removed, install crankshaft timing sprocket by aligning sprocket set key with key groove of sprocket. Using Special Tool (09223-46011) and a hammer, tap in timing sprocket with flange side INWARD. See Fig 1.
- If removed, install No. 1 timing belt idler pulley, plate washer and pivot bolt. Apply Loctite 242 or equivalent on threads of idler pulley pivot bolt. Install and tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- If removed, install No. 2 timing belt idler pulley and bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure idler pulleys are clean and rotate smoothly. Ensure idler pulley bracket moves smoothly.
- Clean any oil or water off of crankshaft timing sprocket and all pulleys. DO NOT use solvent. Temporarily install timing belt on crankshaft timing sprocket, No. 1 idler pulley, and No. 2 idler pulley. If reusing old belt, ensure mating mark on timing belt aligns with mark on crankshaft timing sprocket.NOTE: The engine should be cold.
- Install gasket and timing belt cover spacer. Install timing belt guide (cup side OUT) on end of crankshaft. Install No. 1 timing belt cover. Using Special Tool (09223-46011) and a hammer, tap in crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine drive belt tensioner. Install generator. Install power steering pump pulley. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .CAUTION: Check that crankshaft pulley timing mark is aligned with centers of crankshaft pulley and No. 2 timing belt idler pulley bolt.
- Install camshaft timing sprockets by aligning camshaft timing tube knock pin with pin groove of timing sprocket. Attach timing sprocket to camshaft timing tube with "L" or "R" marks facing FORWARD. Install bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure camshaft timing sprockets are still aligned with mating marks on rear plate. See Figure. Clean camshaft timing sprockets (do not use solvent). Install timing belt on left side camshaft sprocket. If reusing old timing belt, ensure mating mark on belt aligns with mark on left side camshaft sprocket.
- Using spanner wrench, turn left side camshaft sprocket COUNTERCLOCKWISE until there is tension on timing belt between crankshaft timing sprocket and left side camshaft sprocket.
- Install timing belt on right side camshaft sprocket. If reusing old belt, ensure mating mark on belt aligns with mark on right side camshaft sprocket. Ensure there is tension on timing belt between left side and right side camshaft sprockets.
- Using press, slowly apply about 200-2205 lbs. (981-9807 N) of pressure on push rod of timing belt tensioner until rod is retracted. Ensure timing belt tensioner is held with push rod facing upward. Holes in push rod end and housing must be aligned.
- Install 1.27 mm hexagon wrench through holes in housing and end of rod to hold rod in retracted position. Release press. Install dust boot on timing belt tensioner. Install timing belt tensioner. Alternately tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove hexagon wrench from timing belt tensioner. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt. Slowly rotate crankshaft 2 full revolutions CLOCKWISE from TDC to TDC. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets align with timing marks on timing belt rear plate. See Fig 2. If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and reinstall.CAUTION: Always rotate crankshaft CLOCKWISE as viewed from front of engine. DO NOT rotate crankshaft COUNTERCLOCKWISE.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install No. 1 drive belt idler pulley.
- Install A/C compressor, No. 2 timing belt cover, No. 3 timing belt cover and connect Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connectors. Install No. 2 drive belt idler pulley.
- Install radiator assembly. Fill cooling system. Bleed cooling system and check for leaks. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
