Steering Gear: Installation
CAUTION:
Do not damage the turn pressure tubes.
- Install power steering gear assembly from the left handside of the vehicle. Tighten the 2 gear assembly set bolts and nuts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 N.m). Lift the stabilizer bar and install the bolts.
- Install the fuel tube protector. Install 2 bolts and nut.
- Connect the stabilizer bar. Tighten the 4 bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m).
- Connect the pressure feed and return tubes. Using the Power Steering Hose Nut 14 x 17 mm Wrench Set (SST 09631-22020), tighten tube with a torque of 24 ft. lbs. (32 N.m). See Fig 2.
- Connect the tube clamp. Tighten the nut to 84 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
- Connect intermediate shaft. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft. See Figure. Tighten bolt B then bolt A to 26 ft. lbs. (35 N.m).
- Connect the right hand and left hand tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Install the cotter pin and the nut with a torque of 36 ft. lbs. (49 N.m).
- Position the front wheels facing straight ahead.
- Center spiral cable. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the red mark. See Fig 1. The cable will rotate about 3 turns to either left or right of the center.
- Install steering wheel. Install the wheel at straight-ahead position. See Fig 3. Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut. Connect the connector.
- Bleed power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING SYSTEM under LUBRICATION.
- Check the steering wheel center point.
- Tighten the steering wheel set nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 N.m).
- Install steering wheel pad. See Installing Steering Wheel Pad .
- Check the front wheel alignment. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in SUSPENSION.
NOTE:
Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 11.81" (300 mm).Ensure torque SST is parallel to torque wrench.
