Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Installation

  1. Coat lip of NEW oil seal with engine oil, and install seal on camshaft. Coat all bearing journals with engine oil.
  2. Ensure camshafts are correctly positioned, and install camshafts on cylinder head. See Fig 1. Exhaust camshaft contains drive gear for distributor or camshaft position sensor.

  3. Apply a .08-.12" (2.0-3.0 mm) diameter bead of sealant on each side of camshaft, at No. 1 camshaft bearing cap locations. Install No. 1 camshaft bearing cap.
CAUTION: Camshaft bearing caps are identified by an "I" for intake side and "E" for exhaust side. See Figure. While No. 1 camshaft bearing cap is not numbered, all other caps are numbered to indicate location on cylinder head. Ensure arrow on camshaft bearing cap points toward front of engine. See Figure.
  4. Install remaining camshaft bearing caps in correct order, with arrows pointing toward front of engine. Install all camshaft bearing cap bolts. Slightly tighten bolts in small increments using proper sequence to secure components during oil seal installation. See Figure-Figure (STEP 1).
  5. Using Oil Seal Installer (SST 09223-50010), install oil seal in cylinder head. Tighten No. 3 and No. 7 camshaft bearing caps to specification in several steps. See Figure-Figure (STEP 2).
  6. Tighten remaining camshaft bearing cap bolts to specification in sequence using several steps. See Figure-Figure (STEP 3).
  7. Ensure camshaft end play is within specification. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Check and adjust valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  8. Coat distributor or camshaft position sensor "O" ring with engine oil. When installing distributor or camshaft position sensor, rotate crankshaft clockwise so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
  9. On Cressida and Supra non-turbo, align protrusion of distributor gear with groove on distributor housing. See Figure and Figure . Install distributor so bolt hole on cylinder head aligns with center of distributor flange. Install distributor retaining bolt.
  10. On Supra turbo, align drilled mark on gear with groove on camshaft position sensor housing. See Figure and Figure . Install camshaft position sensor so bolt hole on cylinder head aligns with center of camshaft position sensor flange. Install camshaft position sensor retaining bolt.
  11. On all models, reverse removal procedure to install remaining components. Apply sealant at indicated areas on front of cylinder head. See Figure. Install valve cover. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
