Valve Clearance Adjustment
NOTE:
Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
- Remove necessary components to access valve covers. Remove valve covers. Rotate crankshaft so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
- Ensure valve lifters on cylinder No. 1 are loose and valve lifters on cylinder No. 6 are tight. If conditions are not as described, rotate crankshaft one complete revolution.
- Using feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on intake valves of cylinders No. 1 and No. 4 and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 1 and No. 5. Rotate crankshaft an additional 2/3 turn (240 degrees).
- Measure and record valve clearance on intake valves of cylinders No. 3 and No. 5 and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 3 and No. 6. Rotate crankshaft an additional 2/3 turn (240 degrees).
- Measure and record valve clearance on intake valves of cylinders No. 2 and No. 6 and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 2 and No. 4. Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (1)
Application In. (mm) Exhaust Valve .008-.012 (.20-.30) Intake Valve .006-.010 (.15-.25) (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold. - If valve clearance requires adjustment, rotate camshaft so lobe on valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from valve lifter. Position notch area on adjusting shim in direction in which adjusting shim will be removed. Use Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55020) to remove adjusting shim.
- Using SST "A" of valve clearance adjuster, push downward on valve lifter. Place SST "B" between camshaft and valve lifter, and remove SST "A". See Fig 1.
- Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Measure and record thickness of adjusting shim removed. Using clearance and adjusting shim thickness measurements, select proper replacement adjusting shim. See Fig 3 and Fig 4 .
- Install replacement adjusting shim, and recheck valve clearance. Apply sealant at indicated valve cover sealing areas on front of cylinder head. See Fig 2. Install valve cover. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
NOTE:
Determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used by subtracting appropriate valve clearance specification (see VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION table) from measured valve clearance. Add this number to thickness of old shim. Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value. See appropriate SHIM THICKNESS TABLE.
