Rod Bearings
- Before disassembling, mark direction of connecting rod cap and cylinder number. Connecting rod and cap must be installed with front mark toward front of engine. See Figure.
- Connecting rod cap and rod bearing are stamped with size mark. See Fig 1. If replacing rod bearing, ensure size mark on replacement bearing is the same as size mark on original bearing.
- If rod bearing size mark cannot be obtained, add size marks on crankshaft and connecting rod cap to determine size mark of rod bearing. For example, if size mark on crankshaft is "2" and size mark on connecting rod cap is "1", use rod bearing with size mark "3".
- Rod bearing thickness is determined by size mark. See ROD BEARING SPECIFICATIONS table. Ensure connecting rod cap is installed with front mark toward front of engine. See Figure.
- Coat nut and threads of connecting rod bolts with engine oil before tightening them to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Ensure bearing oil clearance and connecting rod side play are within specification. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS and CONNECTING RODS tables under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
