Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

  1. Remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove lower engine cover. Drain cooling system. Drain engine oil. Disconnect air hoses from airflow meter and power steering unit. Remove 3 attaching bolts from air cleaner case. Remove air cleaner with hoses attached.
  2. Disconnect condenser fan motor connector. Disconnect radiator and coolant reservoir hoses. On automatic transmission models, disconnect and plug transmission cooler lines. On all models, remove radiator supports and radiator.
  3. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove water pump pulley and fluid coupling. Disconnect brake booster, heater valve, cruise control and charcoal canister hoses. Disconnect engine ground straps (one on left front fender apron and one at rear of engine). Label and disconnect all electrical connections between engine and chassis.
  4. Disconnect cruise control and accelerator cables. On automatic transmission models, disconnect throttle cable. On all models, disconnect heater hoses. Without disconnecting hoses from A/C compressor and power steering pump, remove A/C compressor and power steering pump and lay aside.
  5. On manual transmission models, remove shift lever from inside vehicle. On all models, disconnect ground strap from fuel hose clamp. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Disconnect fuel lines. Remove exhaust pipe.
  6. Remove drive shaft and insert Transmission Oil Plug (09325-40010 for automatic transmission or 09325-20010 for manual transmission to prevent oil leakage. Remove front crossmember. Disconnect speedometer cable.
  7. Remove manual shift linkage (auto. trans.). Remove clutch slave cylinder (if equipped). Using a jack, support transmission with wooden block between jack and transmission oil pan.
  8. Remove rear engine support member from body with ground strap attached. Attach lifting chain to engine hangers. Remove engine mounting nuts and washers. Ensure all electrical wiring and hoses are disconnected. Carefully lift engine with transmission assembly from engine compartment.
