Checking for Stretch
- Remove timing chain cover. With timing chain installed on engine, attach a spring scale to timing chain on tensioner side. Pull on chain with tension of 22 lbs. (10 kg). If distance between chain tensioner plunger and tensioner body exceeds .531" (13.5 mm), chain and sprockets must be removed and checked. See Fig 1.
NOTE:
When checking distance between tensioner plunger and body, note thickness of tensioner head. If tensioner head is worn beyond specification, measurement will be inaccurate. See TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER & DAMPER .

- Timing chain may be inspected when removed from engine. Secure one link of timing chain and attach spring tension gauge to opposite end. See Fig 2.

- With 11 lbs. (5 kg) tension applied to chain, distance "A" should be no more than 11.47" (291 mm). If distance exceeds specification, replace chain.
