Case Reassembly

  1. On 2-pinion models, assemble side gears and pinion gears into differential case. Ensure oil groove faces towards gear (if present on side gear thrust washer). On 4-pinion models, install side gears, thrust washers, spider, pinion gears. Install differential case cover. Ensure index marks are aligned.

  2. Check backlash between side gears and pinion gears. See AXLE ASSEMBLY SPECIFICATIONS . If not to specification, install selective fit thrust washers. Install equal thickness thrust washers on each side (if possible).
    NOTE: DO NOT  heat ring gear above 230°F (110°C).
  3. Press differential side bearings onto differential case. Heat ring gear in oil bath to approximately 212°F (100°C). Wipe off gear and press onto differential case. Tighten bolts evenly. Bend over lock tabs. Install differential case assembly on differential carrier. Measure ring gear runout.
