Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Rodeo Sport and 2002 Isuzu Rodeo. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Remove gas cap. Using scan tool, read FUEL TANK PRESSURE parameter. If parameter displays 1.51 volts, go to next step. If parameter does not display 1.51 volts, go to DTC P0440: EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION  .
  3. Reinstall gas cap. Disconnect vacuum hose from EVAP purge solenoid valve that goes to EVAP canister. See appropriate diagram in VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. Connect EVAP Diagnostic Station (J41413) or equivalent to disconnected hose. Using scan tool, select EVAPORATIVE SYSTEMS TEST  under MISCELLANEOUS TESTS. Use scan tool to command EVAP vent solenoid On (closed). Pressurize EVAP system until scan tool FUEL TANK PRESSURE reads 1.52-1.60 volts. If FUEL TANK PRESSURE holds as specified, go to next step. If FUEL TANK PRESSURE does not hold as specified, go to step  6 .
  4. Disconnect EVAP Diagnostic Station (J41413) and plug hose end. Disconnect vacuum hose at vacuum supply to EVAP purge solenoid valve. Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to disconnected vacuum supply hose. Using pump, apply 15 inches of H2 O. On scan tool observe FUEL TANK PRESSURE parameter. If FUEL TANK PRESSURE holds between 1.47-1.51 volts, go to step  6 . If FUEL TANK PRESSURE does not hold as specified, go to next step.
  5. Replace EVAP purge solenoid valve. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  6. Check for leaking, kinked or pinched EVAP system hoses. Ensure hoses are routed properly. Check for leaking EVAP vent solenoid valve or clogged filter. See appropriate diagram in VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Start engine. Remove gas cap. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid On (closed) and EVAP purge solenoid Off (0%). Replace gas cap. Run engine at 2500 RPM while monitoring FUEL TANK VACUUM parameter on scan tool. If FUEL TANK VACUUM parameter remains at 30-40 percent, repair is complete. See VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If reading does not maintain as specified, check for intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
