Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. If any DTC other than P1153 or P1154 sets, diagnose affected DTC before proceeding. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no other DTCs are set, start engine and allow it to idle. Operate vehicle within CODE ENABLE CRITERIA . On scan tool, monitor DTC information. If scan tool displays DTC P1134 FAILED THIS IGN, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTC P1134 FAILED THIS IGN, check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  3. If DTC P1153 or P1154 is also set, go to step  9. If DTC is not set, go to next step.
  4. Check exhaust system for leaks. Check for leaking, misaligned or damaged gaskets. Check for loose or missing exhaust system nuts or bolts. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, repeat test starting in step  2. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  5. Check for misaligned, burned or corroded exhaust pipes. Check for leaks at exhaust manifolds. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, repeat test starting in step  2. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check that Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 is securely installed. Check for loose or corroded terminals or damage to wiring harness. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 4-pin harness connector. Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 is located in right exhaust pipe. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red wire). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green wire). Voltage reading should be 3-4 millivolts at both terminals. If voltage is as specified, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step  10.
  8. Using a fused jumper wire, jumper Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 harness connector terminals No. 1 (Green wire) and No. 2 (Red wire). Using scan tool, observe Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 voltage parameter. Voltage should read 10 millivolts and jump to 450 millivolts when jumper is removed. If voltage parameter performs as specified, go to step  12. If voltage parameter does not perform as specified, go to step  13.
  9. NOTE: Before replacing HO2S, check for fuel contamination, use of improper RTV sealant or engine oil and coolant consumption.
  10. Replace affected HO2S. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM Red 80-pin harness connector E-22. PCM is located at right rear of engine compartment. Check for damage to PCM pins or terminals. If a problem was found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem was found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to next step.
  12. Check for and repair open, short to voltage or short to ground in HO2S signal circuits between HO2S and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to next step.
  13. Replace Bank 1 HO2S No. 1. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  14. Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. Use scan tool to clear DTC and verify repair.
