Inspection steps

CAUTION: Before performing inspections according to this flow chart, check that no abnormal condition is present in the engine. (Refer to HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT )
  1. Reading the diagnostic code
    1. Using SSM3, check if any diagnostic code related to CAN communication system is output. (Refer to CHECKING/CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC CODES  )
      RESULT

      Result Go to
Diagnostic code is not output A
      Diagnostic code is output B

B: To CAN communication system (Refer to HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT )

      A: Go to Next Step

  2. Performance of the SSM3 [System Operation Check Mode]
    1. Using SSM3, display the [System Operation Check Mode] screen according to the screen instructions and perform a check. (Refer to CURRENT DATA DISPLAY & SAVE / SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK MODE  )

Item Name Contents of testing Check item
[Water thermometer] Coolant temperature indication changeover
      • 127°C {261°F} [Display H]
      • 120°C {248°F} [Display G]
      • 110°C {230°F} [Display F]
      • Intermediate stable range [Display E]
      • 80°C {176°F} [Display D]
      • 70°C {158°F} [Display C]
      • 60°C {140°F} [Display B]
      • 50°C {122°F} [Display A]

Criteria: Each value specified by [System Operation Check Mode] can be displayed smoothly.

NG: Replacement of the combination meter ASSY (refer to REMOVAL  )

      OK: Go to Next Step

  3. Reading SSM3 data (engine coolant temperature)
    1. Using SSM3, display the [Current Data Display & Save] screen. Check the computer data. (Refer to CURRENT DATA DISPLAY & SAVE / SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK MODE  )
SSM3 DISPLAY: [EACH SYSTEM CHECK] →[COMBINATION METER] →[CURRENT DATA DISPLAY & SAVE]

Item Name [Symbol] Description/display range Normal value Remarks
[Coolant Temp.] [Coolant Temp] Engine coolant temperature input
      Display range: 0 to 127.5°C {0 to 261.5°F}
Equivalent to ambient temperature: When engine is cold
      When engine is fully warmed up: 80 to 100°C {176 to 212°F}
If it is abnormal, the coolant temperature signal system may be faulty

Criteria: The normal value of [Current Data Display & Save] is almost equal to the value of the water temperature receiver gauge.

NG: Replacement of the combination meter ASSY (refer to REMOVAL  )

      OK: Go to Next Step

  4. Reading the diagnostic code (EFI system)
    1. Using SSM3, check if any diagnostic code related to the EFI system is output. (Refer to CHECKING/CLEARING DTC )
      RESULT

      Result Go to
Diagnostic code is not output A
      Diagnostic code is output B

B: To EFI system (Refer to HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT )

      A: Go to Next Step

  5. Reading SSM3 data (engine coolant temperature)
    1. Using SSM3, display the [Current Data Display & Save] screen. Check the computer data. (Refer to CURRENT DATA DISPLAY & SAVE / SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK MODE )
SSM3 DISPLAY: [EACH SYSTEM CHECK] →[ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM] →[CURRENT DATA DISPLAY & SAVE]

Item Name [Symbol] Description/display range Normal value Remarks
[Coolant Temp] [Coolant Temp] Indicates the engine coolant temperature
      Display range: -40 to 215°C {-40 to 419°F}
      75 to 100°C {167 to 212°F} After warming-up
      • Engine coolant temperature after warm-up is 75 to 100°C
      • After the engine is stopped and left unattended for a long time, the engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature and ambient temperature will be almost the same
      • If the engine coolant temperature reads -40°C or 215°C, an open or short circuit may be present in the sensor system

Criteria: The normal value of [Current Data Display & Save] is almost equal to the value of the water temperature receiver gauge.

NG: To EFI system (Refer to HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT )

      OK: Go to Next Step

  6. Replacement of combination meter ASSY
    1. Replace with a new or normally functioning combination meter ASSY (refer to REMOVAL  ) and check the operation of the water temperature receiver gauge.
      RESULT

      Result Go to
      Operates normally A
      Operates abnormally B

B: Replacement of the engine control computer (Refer to REMOVAL )

A: Complete (Internal fault of the combination meter ASSY)
