Cylinder Block Overhaul: Disassembly

  1. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove cylinder heads. Remove water pump, oil pump and oil pan. Remove oil separator cover. Remove 14 mm Allen head plugs from crankcase. Position pistons No. 1 and 2 at BBDC and remove circlip with long-nosed pliers from piston pin bore.
  2. Access to piston pins No. 1 and 2 is through front crankcase service holes. Remove piston pins using Piston Pin Remover (399094310). Access to No. 3 and No. 4 piston pins is through rear crankcase holes. Remove piston pins using piston pin remover.
NOTE: When separating cylinder block, do not allow connecting rods to fall and cause damage. Be sure to keep combinations of pistons, connecting rods and cylinders matched.
  3. Remove all crankcase connecting bolts and separate cylinder block halves. Remove crankshaft and connecting rods. With dial bore gauge, measure cylinder bores for taper, out-of-round and excessive wear. See CYLINDER BLOCK SPECIFICATIONS  chart for tolerances.
  4. If cylinder bore is within specification, check top of cylinder for a ridge. If necessary, remove ridge using a ridge reamer. Remove pistons from cylinder bores.
