MODEL 453.0 (except 453.091), 453.3 (except 453.391), 453.4 (except 453.491) with CODE K36 (Instrument cluster with color 8.9 cm (3.5") display)
Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle.
In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To provide the driver with information, the following indicators are installed in the instrument cluster:
- Permanent displays (e.g. speed)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red, yellow) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (e.g. outside temperature indicator, travel distance display)
The function description for the "Instrument cluster (KI) function" contains the following functions:
- Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
- Function sequence for indicator lamp test
Further functions are described in separate documents:
- Control/warning messages, function
- Display operating conditions, function
- Comfort displays, function
- Trip computer, function
Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
If the following events occur, the default screen is activated in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster:
- Unlocking of the vehicle
- Driver door opened
- Change of terminal status for terminal 15
If the following events occur, the default screen in the multifunction display and the scale illumination of the instrument cluster are activated:
- Standing lights ON
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Change of status from circuit 15R to circuit 15
Immediately prior to the indicator lamp test, the pointer of the speedometer is illuminated and moves within a defined range, 2/3 of the maximum possible deflection.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster carries out this test automatically each time terminal 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- ECO start/stop function indicator lamp not available (with ECO start/stop function)
- Oil pressure warning lamp
- Alternator warning lamp
- SRS indicator lamp
- Anti-lock braking system indicator lamp
- ESP® warning lamp
- Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Power steering warning lamp
- Distance warning function warning lamp (for distance warning function)
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp
The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.
Detailed information about actuation of the warning and indicator lamps is given in the separate document "Instrument cluster, component description".
