Remove/install follower joint of steering knuckle bearing - AR33.20-P-0427EW

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Detach front wheel and tire assembly    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050EW
2.1 Remove center and rear engine compartment paneling Vehicles with gasoline engine  
    Remove/install bottom engine compartment paneling MODEL 212 with ENGINE 156, 157, 271, 272, 273, 274, 276, 278
MODEL 218 with ENGINE 157, 276, 278

2.2 Remove center and rear bottom part of noise encapsulation Vehicles with diesel engine  
    Remove/install bottom parts of soundproofing MODEL 212, 218 with ENGINE 642, 651 AR94.30-P-5300EW
3 Detach bracket (1) of link rod on left front level sensor from cross strut (3) With CODE 489 (AIRmatic (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping)) When removing left upper ball joint, on vehicles with automatic headlamp range adjustment
NOTES
Do not unclip the link rod from the bracket (1). The link rod will be damaged otherwise.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace cable tie.
 
4 Detach bracket (1) of link rod on right front level sensor from cross strut (3) with CODE 489 (AIRmatic (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping))
When removing right upper ball joint
NOTES
Do not unclip the link rod from the bracket (1). The link rod will be damaged otherwise.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace cable tie.
 
5 Unscrew nut from upper ball joint (4) on steering knuckle (2)    
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Modified cone for upper ball joint to steering knuckle MODEL 212.### ## up to 001281 BT33.25-P-0400-01EW

6 Unscrew nut from upper ball joint (4) on cross strut (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION MODEL 212 *BA33.20-P-1007-01O

7 Detach upper ball joint (4) from cross strut (3) SPECIAL TOOL Puller Figure

9 Remove nut from cross strut (3) on front axle carrier (5) NOTES
When undoing the nut the bolt must not be twisted. It is essential to counterhold the bolt. Otherwise the fixing lugs for the caster adjustment in the elastomer bearing will be sheared off when the repair kit is fitted.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten nuts and screws/bolts of suspension components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.

10 Remove upper ball joint (4)    
11 Install in the reverse order
