Function requirements, general
- No overvoltage or undervoltage
- Circuit 15 or 15R ON
- Function in instrument cluster (A1) enabled
- Right outside mirror (M21/2) via right outside mirror adjustment switch (S20s11) in driver side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group (S20) selected
- Position measurement supplies valid readings
- Vehicle speed v > 10 km/h (actuation driving position function)
The circuit 15 status is sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the right front door control unit (N69/2).
The instrument cluster transmits the status "Passenger side outside mirror park position enabled" and the vehicle speed to the right front door control unit via the interior CAN.
Passenger-side outside mirror park position, general
It is possible to save a park position for the right outside mirror when the car is shifted into reverse, allowing the driver to see the curb.
The passenger-side outside mirror park position function includes the following subfunctions:
- Store park position function sequence
- Actuate park position function sequence
- Function sequence for moving to drive position

Store park position function sequence
To define the park position of the right outside mirror, it must be actuated manually via the right outside mirror adjustment switch and outside mirror adjustment switch (S20s12) in the driver side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group. The position of the outside mirror is sensed by evaluating the signals from the vertical inclination adjustment potentiometer (M21/2r2) and the horizontal vertical adjustment potentiometer (M21/2r3). The park position is stored by the left front seat adjustment switch group (S22). After momentarily pressing the left front memory function switch (S22s6) and then actuating the outside mirror adjustment switch in any direction within t = 3 s, the current position of the right outside mirror in the right front door control unit is stored as park position.
The left front door control unit (N69/1) reads in the status of the driver side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch and the status of the left front seat adjustment switch group via the left front door LIN (LIN B5) and transmits the adjustment request and the request to store the park position to the right front door control unit via the interior CAN. The right front door control unit then correspondingly actuates the vertical inclination adjustment actuator motor (M21/2m1) and horizontal inclination adjustment actuator motor (M21/2m2) and directly reads in the signals from the vertical inclination adjustment potentiometer and horizontal inclination adjustment potentiometer.
A manual adjustment of the right outside mirror in the park position is stored as a new park position.
Actuate park position function sequence
When shifted to reverse (with transmission 711, 716) or to the "R" range (with transmission 722, 724.2, 725.0) t > 0.6 s, the right outside mirror is moved to the park position. The right front door control unit actuates the vertical inclination adjustment actuator motor and the horizontal inclination adjustment actuator motor.
Vehicles with transmission 711, 716:
Reverse gear engagement is detected via the status of the backup lamp switch (S16/2), which is read in directly by the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
Vehicles with transmission 722.6:
The request to engage gear range "R" is defined by the corresponding selector lever position.
The electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) transmits the selector lever position via the drive CAN (CAN C), CDI control unit (N3/9) (on diesel engine) or ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (on gasoline engine) and chassis CAN (CAN E) (up to 28.2.13) or chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) (as of 1.3.13) to the front SAM control unit.
Vehicles with transmission 722.9, 724.2, 725.0:
Gear range "R" is engaged through the fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4). Then the fully integrated transmission control unit transmits the status "Gear range R engaged" via drive CAN, CDI control unit or ME-SFI control unit and chassis CAN (up to 28.2.13) or chassis CAN 1 (as of 1.3.13) to the front SAM control unit.
Two microprocessors are installed in the front SAM control unit, one for control of basic functions, e.g. the exterior lights, and the second for control of the central gateway functions. Both processors communicate with each other internally via interior CAN. Using all incoming information, the microprocessor which controls the central gateway functions generates the "Reverse gear engaged" signal irrespective of the transmission variant and sends this signal to the reversing camera control unit via the interior CAN.
Function sequence for moving to drive position
The right outside mirror is automatically moved back to the original position when one of the following conditions is fulfilled:
- Circuit 15 OFF
- Signal "Reverse gear not engaged" is present for t = 10 s
- Vehicle speed v > 10 km/h
- Left outside mirror switch (S20s10) actuated
The right outside mirror is returned to the original position even if it was moved to the park position manually.
