2 Mount the rack-and-pinion steering onto steering gear housing support IMPORTANT Only one adjustment procedure for the rack-and-pinion steering is permissible. if several caulkings (center punch marks) are present on the adjustment screw (4), it is assumed that an adjustment procedure has been undertaken. In this case, the rack-and-pinion steering has to be replaced.
IMPORTANT Make sure that the workplace is clean when carrying out the work described below and while performing repairs.
Only the specified tools may be used.
Before starting the repair, remove loose contamination on the steering housing (3) without using cleaning agent.

Otherwise the compression spring (5) may be damaged.
IMPORTANT Further procedure for determining an unacceptable play between toothed rack (1) and thrust piece:
  • Play less than 0.04 mm: Adjust play
  • Play 0.08 to 0.4 mm: Adjust Play
  • Play greater than 0.4 mm: Replace rack-and-pinion steering
