Remove/check/install front axle brake pads - AR42.10-P-1610EWA

MODEL 212, 218 4-piston fixed-caliper brake

DANGER Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
DANGER Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Clean area around cap on expansion reservoir for brake fluid Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
2 Unscrew the cap on the brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid IMPORTANT This prevents the expansion reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back.  
3 Remove front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
4 Detach electrical connection from brake wear sensor at front right (S10/2x1)    
5 Use punch to pound out pin (5) and remove retaining spring (2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Pound in pin (5) up to end stop.
Check retaining spring (2) is correctly seated.
 
6 Remove brake pads (6) from brake caliper (1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not apply brake paste or lubricants to the brake linings (6) and brake calipers (1).
Only complete sets of brake linings (6)
approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
 
INSPECT Check     
7 Check pin (5) and retaining spring (2) for damage and condition If there are problems:

Replace pin (5) or retaining spring (2).
 
8 Check brake linings (6) for wear and that they are in good condition    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4253A
    In case of damage or excessive wear:

IMPORTANT Replace brake linings (6) as a complete set only.
 
9 Check brake disk (7) for wear and that it is in good condition    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4256EW
    In case of damage or excessive wear:

Replace brake disks (7).
 
    Model 212, 218
except code B07 (Ceramic brake system) 4-piston fixed-caliper brake
IMPORTANT Replace brake disks (7) as a complete set only.

10 Check brake caliper (1) and dust boots of brake piston for leaktightness and damage If there are problems:

Replace brake caliper (1).
 
      AR42.10-P-0070EWA 
11 Press back brake piston using resetting device IMPORTANT Secure remaining brake piston (5) using two SPECIAL TOOL wedges against slipping out.

If brake pistons are sluggish:

Replace brake caliper (1).

CLEANING Clean     
12 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (6) on brake caliper (1) NOTES Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects. The brake caliper (1) or the dust boots of the brake pistons can otherwise be damaged.  
    Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
13 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of pad backing plate of brake lining (6) When replacing the brake linings (6) or when replacing the front right brake wear sensor (S10/2).  
14 Install in the reverse order    
15 Depress brake pedal several times until brake linings (6) rest against brake disks (7) IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
16 Check/correct brake fluid level in expansion reservoir    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210EW
17 Carry out brake test on the test stand
