IMPORTANT Notes on automatic transmission   AH27.19-P-0001-01NKB
REMOVING Remove
1 Remove main components of transmission   AR27.50-P-0610W
DISASSEMBLING Disassemble
2 Remove bearing (16l) and check for wear IMPORTANT TRANSMISSION 722.9 as of 1/1/05, 724.2 The bearing (16l) is stuck on the inside diameter of the Ravigneaux set and is removed when the planetary gear set is removed.
If necessary:

Replace bearing (16l).

INSPECT Check
3 Check thrust bearing (161) and bearing (162) for swirl marks and damage IMPORTANT The thrust bearing (161) and bearing (162) together with the external plate carrier (16a) form a single unit and must always be replaced together.
If necessary:

Replace thrust bearing (161) and bearing (162).

4 Remove retaining ring (105s) and end disk (105)
5 Remove clutch pack (5) and disk spring (5t) IMPORTANT Check the disks for scorch marks and wear; replace if necessary.
6 Place external plate carrier (16a) in lever press IMPORTANT The external plate carrier (16a) may not be disconnected from the torque converter housing. Therefore place the external plate carrier (16a) with the torque converter housing in a lever press.
Workshop press (stationary)

7 Place thrust device on disk spring (16t) IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Position thrust device precisely (see arrow in second picture) to enable retaining ring (16s) to be removed later.
SPECIAL TOOL Pressing tool Figure
SPECIAL TOOL Set of drifts Figure
8 Actuate lever press until retaining ring (16s) is exposed NOTES Stop lever press stoke as soon as accessibility to groove is sufficient.
Excess force will otherwise cause damage.

9 Remove retaining ring (16s) from groove
10 Move back lever press
11 Take thrust device and external plate carrier (16a) out of lever press
12 Remove retaining ring (16s)
13 Remove disk spring (16t)
14 Remove piston (16k) from external plate carrier (16a) IMPORTANT Check vulcanized seal for damage and wear, replace piston (16k) if necessary.
INSPECT Check
15 Check external plate carrier (16a) for damage and wear IMPORTANT Depending on the production date, an external plate carrier without inner phase (1a) or an external plate carrier with inner phase (2a) is installed (see the arrows in the third picture). This is why it is necessary to note the parts information in the EPC later on when installing a new retaining ring (16s).
ASSEMBLING Assemble
16 Install piston (16k)
17 Install disk spring (16t) IMPORTANT Insert disk spring (16t) in such a way that curvature of inner circumference points toward piston (16k).
18 Fit retaining ring (16s) IMPORTANT Final installation is only possible when the lever press is actuated.
19 Place external plate carrier (16a) in lever press
20 Place thrust device on disk spring (16t) IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Position thrust device precisely (see arrow in second picture) to enable retaining ring (16s) to be installed.

21 Actuate lever press until groove of retaining ring (16s) is exposed NOTES Stop lever press stoke as soon as accessibility to groove is sufficient.
Excess force will otherwise cause damage to the external plate carrier (16a).

22 Install retaining ring (16s) IMPORTANT Note the installation position of the retaining ring (16s). If installed incorrectly, the disk spring (5t) jams.
23 Move back lever press
24 Take thrust device and external plate carrier (16a) out of lever press
25 Install disk spring (5t) and disk pack (5) in external plate carrier (16a) IMPORTANT Insert disk spring (5t) in such a way that curvature of inner circumference points toward piston (16k).
Observe insertion sequence when inserting disks:
