Remove/install rear axle shaft - AR35.30-P-0620MCC

MODEL 451.3/4 with TRANSMISSION 717.4

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove left or right rear wheel   AR40.10-P-1100MCC
2 Unscrew bolt (2) of rear axle shaft (1) IMPORTANT To loosen and tighten the bolt (2), screw two wheel bolts (9) into the wheel hub and counterhold the wheel hub using a suitable tool.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace self-locking bolt (2) of rear axle shaft (1).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, rear axle shaft to rear axle shaft flange
*BA35.30-P-1002-01D 
3 Support the rear axle cross member (3) using a transmission jack, unscrew bolts (4) and lower the rear axle cross member (3) 000 588 11 62 00 Major assembly mount   WS01.00-P-0092B
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, crossmember to integral carrier *BA35.10-P-1003-01F 
4 Unscrew wheel bolts (9) from the wheel hub, position the adapter (10) to line up with the hole circle and fasten to the wheel hub with the wheel bolts (9) SPECIAL TOOL Adaptation Fig 5
5 Position the extraction and insertion tool (11) to line up with the hole circle and fasten with bolts (12) to the adapter (10) SPECIAL TOOL Adaptation Fig 5

6 Press rear axle shaft (1) out of wheel hub and detach extraction and insertion tool (11) as well as adapter (10) from wheel hub SPECIAL TOOL Adaptation Fig 5

7 Support axle tube (5) with major assemblies lifting table or transmission jack 000 588 03 62 00 Lifting platform WS01.00-P-0091A  
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS   IMPORTANT If both rear axle shafts (1) are removed simultaneously, the major assemblies lifting table should be used to support the axle tube (5).  
8 Remove expansion clip on cover (13), remove cover (13)    
9 Unscrew bolt (6) of shock absorber (8) on axle tube (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, shock absorber to rear axle *BA32.25-P-1001-03N 
10 Lower axle tube (5) carefully and guide rear axle shaft (1) out of wheel hub NOTES Make sure that the inner ball joint of the rear axle shaft (1) is not pulled apart.
Otherwise, the rear axle shaft (1) can get damaged.
IMPORTANT When lowering the axle tube (5) ensure that the rear-axle spring does not fall out of its supports.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Observe the correct seat of the rear-axle springs in the supports on the axle tube (5) and on the integral support. Insert the shock absorber (8) into the support on the axle tube (5).
 
11 Raise the axle tube (5) and fix in position on shock absorber (8) with bolt (6) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Unscrew screw/bolt (6) on shock absorber (8) and lower the axle tube (5) until the rear axle shaft (1) can be inserted into the wheel hub.
In the process ensure that the rear-axle spring does not fall out of its supports.
 
12 Loosen rear axle shaft (1) from transmission using impact extractor and extraction tool (7) and remove NOTES
Do not damage radial shaft sealing ring. Leakage can otherwise occur.
IMPORTANT Collect escaping transmission oil in a suitable container.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace retaining ring on the inner joint of the rear axle shaft (1).

13 Seal the transmission opening with plug Cap to transmission housing *BR00.45-Z-1005-15A 
14 Install in the reverse order    
15 Check transmission oil level, adjust to correct level if necessary Drain oil, refill
