Rear Drum Brake Shoes: Installation

NOTE: When replacing rear brake shoes, inspect the backing plate for excessive wear at the 6 raised shoe contact pads. Excessive wear at the raised shoe contact pads, such as notches or deep grooves, could impede shoe travel.
  1. Lubricate the adjuster lever surfaces that rub on the brake shoe web. Lubricate backing plate at the 6 raised shoe contact pads.
  2. Install parking brake cable to parking brake lever of the trailing (rear) brake shoe.
  3. Install trailing (rear) brake shoe to the backing plate using the hold-down pin and retaining spring.
  4. Attach lower retaining spring and install the leading (front) brake shoe, hold down pin, and the retaining spring.
  5. Slightly pull apart the brake shoes and install adjuster unit.
  6. Install adjuster lever with spring.
  7. NOTE: Check that brake shoe is correctly engaged in wheel cylinder at top and anchor at bottom. Check that adjuster notches properly engage in brake shoe notches.
  8. Install retaining bracket. Install upper return spring.
  9. Adjust drum brake shoes. See BRAKE DRUM  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  10. Install brake drum and retaining screw. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Install rear wheels. Tighten lug nuts to specification. Lower vehicle from hoist.
  12. NOTE: Prior to operating vehicle, depress brake a few times. If this operation is not carried out, brakes will not operate during initial brake applications and may cause an accident resulting in personal injuries.
  13. Apply and release the brake pedal 20 times to allow adjuster to position brake shoes.
  14. Adjust park brake cable. Refer to PARKING BRAKE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
