Insufficient Cooling
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Saab 9-3 and 2000 Saab 9-3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure radiator cooling fan(s) are operating properly. Ensure temperature of receiver-drier inlet and outlet lines are the same. Ensure temperature and air distribution control knobs are appropriately set. Ensure airflow through condenser is not restricted. Ensure A/C compressor drive belt is not damaged, worn or slipping. Ensure fan and A/C compressor fuses are okay. Ensure low-side refrigerant pressures are within specifications. See SPECIFICATIONS .
- Start engine and allow to idle. Select recirculated air, maximum heat, and maximum fan speed. Close all doors and windows, and wait 5 minutes. If compressor operates continuously, go to next step. If compressor cuts in and out, go to step 7 . If compressor does not cut in, check compressor operation. See COMPRESSOR DOES NOT CUT IN .
- Using scan tool, contact Dashboard Integrated Central Electronics (DICE) control module and read EVAPORATOR TEMPERATURE. If temperature value is less than 50°F (10°C), go to next step. If temperature value is 50°F (10°C) or more, go to step 4 .
- Check A/C system for refrigerant leaks. Perform repairs as necessary. When repairs are complete, go to 10 . If there are no leaks, go to next step.
- Measure amount of refrigerant in system. If system contains correct amount of refrigerant, replace expansion valve. Charge A/C system and go to next step. If system does not contain correct amount of refrigerant, charge A/C system with correct amount of refrigerant and go to step 10 .
- Start engine and allow to idle. Press A/C button, select maximum cold, maximum fan speed, and defrost mode. Allow A/C system to stabilize. Using scan tool, contact DICE control module and read EVAPORATOR TEMPERATURE value. If value is less than 50°F (10°C), go to step 10 . If value is 50°F (10°C) or more, replace compressor clutch. When repairs are complete, go to step 10 .
- Using scan tool, contact DICE control module and read A/C PRESSURE and EVAPORATOR TEMPERATURE values. If A/C pressure is more than 391.6 psi (27.5 kg/cm2 ), go to next step. If evaporator temperature value is less than 32°F (0°C), replace evaporator anti-freeze sensor. See Figure .
- Using scan tool, contact TRIONIC engine control module and read COOLANT TEMPERATURE value. If coolant temperature is more than 257°F (125°C), repair excessive engine coolant temperature. If engine cooling system are okay, replace engine coolant temperature sensor. When repairs are complete, go to step 10 .
- Install A/C system manifold gauge set. Compare high-side A/C system pressure value with scan tool A/C PRESSURE value. If pressure values are similar, drain and charge A/C system with correct amount of refrigerant. If pressure values are different, replace A/C pressure sensor. When repairs are complete, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear all DTCs. Road test vehicle for at least 5 minutes with various engine loads and engine speeds. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If no DTCs are set and A/C system operates properly, inspection is complete. If any DTCs are set, go to CONTROL MODULES under COMPONENT TESTS.
