Compressor Does Not Cut In (No A/C)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Saab 9-3 and 2000 Saab 9-3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under steering column. Using scan tool, contact Dashboard Integrated Central Electronics (DICE) control module and ensure it is programmed for A/C operation. If DICE control module is programmed for A/C operation, go to step  3 . If DICE control module is not programmed for A/C operation, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, program DICE control module for A/C operation. Clear DTCs and recheck A/C operation. If A/C operates properly, inspection is complete. If A/C does not operate properly, replace DICE control module. See CONTROL MODULES  under COMPONENT TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, contact TRIONIC engine control module. Activate A/C RELAY (ON). If A/C compressor clutch engages, go to next step. If compressor clutch does not engage, go to step  13 .
  4. Start engine and allow to idle. Push A/C button, turn fan on, and select maximum cold. See Figure . Using scan tool, contact DICE control module. Read A/C IN value (wire from A/C switch). If value is ON, go to next step. If value is not ON, replace A/C-heater control panel. When repairs are completed, go to step  16 .
  5. With engine operating at idle and A/C system stabilized, use scan tool to contact DICE control module to read A/C PRESSURE. If pressure displayed is less than 29.0 psi (2.0 kg/cm2 ), go to next step. If pressure displayed is more than 391.6 psi (27.5 kg/cm2 ), go to step  7 . If pressure displayed is 29.0-391.6 psi (2.0-27.5 kg/cm2 ), go to step  8 .
  6. Connect refrigerant pressure manifold gauge set. With engine operating at idle and A/C system stabilized, use scan tool to contact DICE control module and read A/C PRESSURE. Compare refrigerant high-pressure values from gauge set and scan tool. If values are the same, check A/C system for a leak and charge system. Perform repairs as necessary. If values are not the same, replace A/C pressure sensor. When repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  7. Connect refrigerant pressure manifold gauge set. With engine operating at idle and A/C system stabilized, use scan toll to contact DICE control module and read A/C PRESSURE. Compare refrigerant high-pressure values from gauge set and scan tool. If values are the same, check A/C system for an overcharged condition. Perform repairs as necessary. If values are not the same, replace A/C pressure sensor. When repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  8. With engine operating at idle and A/C system stabilized, use scan tool to contact DICE control module and read COOLANT TEMPERATURE. If coolant temperature is more than 257°F (125°C), go to next step. If coolant temperature is 257°F (125°C) or less, go to step  10 .
  9. Measure engine coolant temperature using a thermometer. If verified coolant temperature seems reasonable, go to step  16 . If verified coolant temperature is not reasonable, check cooling system. Repair as necessary. When repairs are completed, go to step  16 .
  10. With engine operating at idle and A/C system stabilized, use scan tool to contact DICE control module and read EVAPORATOR TEMPERATURE. If evaporator temperature is 41°F (5°C) or more, go to next step. If evaporator temperature is less than 41°F (5°C) and is reasonable, go to step  16 .
  11. Using scan tool, contact TRIONIC control module and read A/C IN signal value. If signal value is ON, replace TRIONIC control module. See CONTROL MODULES  under COMPONENT TESTS. If signal value is not ON, replace DICE control module. See CONTROL MODULES  under COMPONENT TESTS. When repairs are complete, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool, clear all DTCs from all systems. Test drive vehicle varying engine loads and speeds for at least 5 minutes. If no DTC resets, repairs are complete. If any DTC resets, see CONTROL MODULES  under COMPONENT TESTS.
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect compressor clutch connector. Using a fused jumper wire, apply battery voltage to compressor clutch connector. If compressor clutch engages, go to next step. If compressor clutch does not engage, replace compressor clutch. When repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  14. Turn ignition off. Remove A/C relay located in engine compartment fuse/relay box. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between ground and A/C relay connector terminal No. 1/30 (Red/Black wire on 2000 models; Violet/White wire on 2001 models). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, repair Red/Black wire circuit between A/C relay and fuse No. 5 (15-amp). When repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  15. Turn ignition off. Disconnect compressor clutch connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between A/C relay connector terminal No. 1/30 (Red/Black wire on 2000 models; Violet/White wire on 2001 models) and terminal No. 2/87 (Blue wire). Connect a test light between ground and harness side of compressor clutch connector terminal. If test light comes on, replace A/C relay. If test light does not come, repair Blue wire between compressor clutch and A/C relay. When repairs are complete, go to next step.
  16. Using scan tool, clear all DTCs. Ensure A/C system operates properly. If A/C system does not operate properly, replace DICE control module. See CONTROL MODULES  under COMPONENT TESTS.
