- → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

Read out the DME control unit fault memory before getting started.
> WM, 033500 - ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS FAULT MEMORY .
Disconnect battery ground terminal.
For Boxster vehicles: Move convertible top to service position.
> WM, 6101IN CONVERTIBLE TOP IN SERVICE POSITION .
Remove air cleaner housing.
242519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR CLEANER HOUSING .
Remove rear wheel.
> 440519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING WHEEL .
Remove rear underbody cover.
> Refer to the appropriate service information. .

Loosen heat shield.

7.1 Cylinder bank 1-2: Unscrew screws -1 - and push heat shield -2 - downwards -arrows- .

7.2 Cylinder bank 3-4: Unscrew screws -2 - and slide heat shield -1 - down at the right.

Loosen screws -2 - on clamping sleeve -1 - on tailpipe cover and turn it down.

Remove rear-axle cross member.
> 420619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR-AXLE CROSS MEMBER .

Information
- It may only be supported over a large area at the oil pan.
- Localised loading is not permitted.
Information
- When lowering the engine, it must not rest on the rear-axle cross member.
- The exhaust system must not touch against the body or rear apron when lowering it.
- Loosen clamps on the tailpipe cover if necessary and turn tailpipe cover downwards.
- Always be careful of hoses, lines and cables when lowering the system!
- Always avoid collisions!
Carefully lower the engine.
> 1001IN LOWERING THE ENGINE TO COMPLETE OTHER WORK .
1. 10.1 Lower the engine as far as required until the union nut -2 - on the fuel collection pipe -1 - is easily accessible.
