Adjusting And Calibrating Parking-Brake Shoes
Information
- The electric parking brake with asbestos-free brake pads must never be adjusted in such a way that the pad has to grind free during operation.
- Adjustments must only be carried out at the two rear wheel adjustment devices.
- Make sure that the EPB cables are routed and guided correctly.
Information
In the event of unfavorable tolerances, the disc brake pads may prevent the brake disc from turning freely. If this happens, the brake pads must be pressed back slightly and evenly using a suitable tool.
Information
The instructions in the PIWIS Tester take precedence and in the event of a discrepancy, these are the instructions that must be followed. A discrepancy may arise with later software versions.
- Move rear brake into installation position.
- 1.1 > 9818 - PIWIS Tester II must be connected and started.
- 1.2 Select in the control unit overview.
- 1.3 must now be selected
- 1.4 must be selected
- Adjust brake shoes on both wheels.
- 2.1 Turn the relevant rear wheel with the opening to the adjustment device position
- 2.2 Using a screwdriver, adjust the adjustment device as far as required towards -A - tighten- until the wheel can no longer be turned. The subsequent torque of the wheel must be greater than 100 Nm (74 ftlb.)
- 2.3 Loosen the adjustment device by 12 clicks towards -B - loosen- (wheels must be able to turn freely).
- Check parking brake basic setting.
- 3.1 On > 9818 - PIWIS Tester II , select in the control unit overview.
- 3.2 must now be selected
- 3.3
must then be selected
Information
It may be necessary to fine-tune the adjustment device after selecting the basic setting. The required dimensions are displayed in > 9818 - PIWIS Tester II .
- Adjustment dimension = required dimension - actual dimension (required dimension minus actual dimension)
- One click on the adjustment device corresponds to > Adjustment value 0.15 mm .
Information
A calculated value in the positive range means: Turn adjustment device towards B - loosen
A calculated value in the negative range means: Turn adjustment device towards A - tighten.
- If necessary:
Fine-tune adjustment device.
Example: Actual dimension: 2.4 mm; Required dimension: 1.8 mm
Adjustment dimension = required dimension - actual dimension
Adjustment dimension = 1.8 mm - 2.4 mm = -0.6 mm -0.6 mm/0.15 mm = -4 clicks
Since the adjustment dimension is negative, this means that the gap dimension is too big and the adjustment device must be adjusted towards -A - tighten- .
Left adjustment device, A - tighten, B - loosen
Right adjustment device, A - tighten, B - loosen
- Fit rear wheels.

Information
- Grinding of the brake discs/parking-brake shoes is only necessary if either the brake discs or the parking-brake shoes were replaced.
- Grinding down applies only to grey cast-iron brakes with one-piece brake discs.
- Grinding of grey cast-iron brakes on the Cayman GT4 is not permitted because compound brake discs with aluminium brake disc hubs are installed.
- Grinding of PCCB brake discs/parking-brake shoes is not permitted.
- Grind down parking-brake shoes (Important! Not for PCCB or not for compound brake discs with aluminium brake disc hubs).
- Calibrate electric parking brake.
- 7.1 On > 9818 - PIWIS Tester II , select in the control unit overview.
- 7.2 must now be selected
- 7.3 must be selected
- Check the function of the EPB (electric parking brake).
- 8.1 Actuate the EPB button several times (2-3 times) and check that the actuators open and close properly on both sides.
- 8.2 Fit disc brake pads by operating the footbrake several times.
