Removing Transfer Gear

Information 

Transfer gear with gas nitrocarburised (GNC) "hardened" steel plates.

• Check compatibility of hardware (transfer gear) and software. 
• If a transfer gear with GNC plates is installed for the first time, the PR number LU2 must be written under Maintenance of vehicle data in the PIWIS Tester. 

1. Unscrew both exhaust system holders on the transfer gear -arrows-  .

2. Release and disconnect cable plug -1-  on the transfer gear at the bottom.

3. Support the automatic transmission at the oil pan using > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack.
4. Remove transmission cross member.
   1. 4.1  Unscrew M10 fastening screws -B-  on the transmission mount.
   2. 4.2  Unscrew M10 fastening screws -A-  at the outside and remove cross member.

5. Depending on model: 

   Disconnect vent line at the transfer gear.

   Information 

   • Get one or more people to help when installing/removing heavy or difficult-to-reach components. 
   • This will prevent or reduce the risk of possible damage. 
6. Remove transfer gear.
   1. 6.1  Unscrew M10 aluminium screws on the transfer gear -arrows-  .
   2. 6.2  Lower the automatic transmission slightly using the transmission jack if necessary.
   3. 6.3  Replace aluminium screws.

7. Remove transfer gear from the automatic transmission with the help of another person and set it down.
