Installing Transfer Box

Information 

Do not pull the transfer gear against the transmission with the fastening screws as this can tilt the transfer gear.

Information 

• Get one or more people to help when installing/removing heavy or difficult-to-reach components. 
• This will prevent or reduce the risk of possible damage. 

Information 

Transfer gear with gas nitrocarburised (GNC) "hardened" steel plates.

• Check compatibility of hardware (transfer gear) and software. 
• If a transfer gear with GNC plates is installed for the first time, the PR number LU2 must be written under Maintenance of vehicle data in the PIWIS Tester. 

Information 

• If the transfer gear with servo motor (control unit) is replaced, there is no need to reload data (classification data).
• This data is already contained in the control unit for servo motor and transmission bundle replacement.
• If only the servo motor (control unit) is replaced, the data (wear values, classification data, etc.) must be read out of the old control unit and written into the new one using the PIWIS Tester.
• If the data can no longer be read out, the classification data on the transfer gear housing must be read off and written using the PIWIS Tester: - > All-wheel\Maintenance/repairs\Control unit replacement 
• Classification data can be found on the transfer gear housing.

Only valid for model year 2011 - 2012: 

> 391300 All-wheel drive control unit needs to be replaced: Missing offset and gradient values on the transfer gear (66/11)

Example: classification data for transfer gear

1. Installation is performed in reverse order. Pay attention to the following:
   1. 1.1 If a new transfer box is installed, the vent line may have to be retrofitted. 

      > 397019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TRANSFER BOX VENT LINE 

   2. 1.2  Fit and secure the transfer box with the help of another person.
   3. 1.3  Check that dowel sleeves for centring the transmission/transfer box in the transmission are fitted. These may need to be inserted.
   4. 1.4  Grease splines on the drive shaft from the transfer box and splines on the output shaft from the transmission with lubricant for clutch disk splines (Part No. 000.043.024.00).
   5. 1.5  Slide the transfer box fully onto the transmission and at the same time, guide the splines of the drive shaft/transfer box and output shaft/transmission together so that they are centred. If the splines are positioned correctly, the transfer box will slide as far as it can go against the transmission.
2. Fit and tighten new aluminium screws on the transfer box evenly -Arrows-  .

   > Initial tightening 20 Nm (14.8 ftlb.) -- Dang --

   > Final tightening 90 Degree -- Dang --

3. Install transmission cross member.
   1. 3.1  Fit cross member on the outside of the body using new M10 screws -A-  .

      > Initial tightening 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.) -- Dang --

      > Final tightening 90 Degree -- Dang --

   2. 3.2  Fit cross member on the transmission mount using new M10 screws -B-  .

      > Initial tightening 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.) -- Dang --

      > Final tightening 90 Degree -- Dang --

4. Further assembly is carried out in reverse order.
