Assembly overview - cardan shafts

1	Front final drive
2	Front cardan shaft
3	Transmission with transfer gear
4	Transmission end damper
5	Rear cardan shaft
6	Rear final drive
7	Tunnel support
8	Screw securing damper to transfer gear > Tightening torque 32 (24 ftlb.) Nm -- Dang --
9	Screw securing centre bearing to body/replace > Initial tightening 20 (15 ftlb.) Nm -- Dang -- > Final tightening + 90° -- Dang --
10	Screw securing tunnel support to body > Tightening torque 60 (44 ftlb.) Nm -- Dang --

Important notes:

The cardan shaft must not be repaired.
Do not kink the rear cardan shaft; only store and transport it in elongated position.
Set rear cardan shaft with the holder down facing upwards.
Mark the position of all parts in relation to each other before removal.
Re-install at the same position (possible bearing damage and humming noise due to imbalance if not re-installed at the same position.

Parts must be re-installed at the marked positions to prevent imbalance, which can cause damage to the bearings and humming noises.

When removing the front cardan shaft from the transfer gear only or from the front final drive only or when removing the rear cardan shaft from the rear final drive, the particular cardan shaft must be tied up or supported.
The cardan shafts must not be repaired.

Information

The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.

Remove engine-bay guard holder.

1.1 Unscrew the two fastening nuts -arrows- used to secure the engine-bay guard holder to the body.
1.2 Unscrew fastening screw in the centre.

1.3 Remove the two engine-bay guard holders on the left and right.

Marking installation position of cardan shaft
1. The final drives and cardan shafts are paired in the production process, so it is important to maintain the original position.
Remove cardan shaft.
1. 3.1 Press the cardan shaft completely off the transfer gear journal using a mounting lever -A- .
  (Use a commercially available mounting lever that is about 600 mm long, e.g. Hazet 652)
2. 3.2 Press the cardan shaft off the front final drive pin using a mounting lever.
3. 3.3 Remove cardan shaft in a downward direction.
