Installing power-steering gear

NOTE: Water can leak in if sealing elements are damaged.

Component can become damaged or may not function.

→ Replace damaged sealing elements.

→ Check that sealing elements are fitted correctly.

Information

Make sure that the pre-fitted intermediate wire harness and the torque sensor connector are not damaged during installation. If one of these components is damaged, the complete steering gear must be replaced .

Installation is performed in reverse order.

Pay particular attention to the following:

Always use new steering gear fastening screws and a new clamping screw on the universal joint following removal. Clean screw threads and make sure that they remain clean and free of grease.
Always check the bellows and clamps for damage and make sure they are seated securely to prevent water from leaking in.
Connectors must lock with an audible click.
Replace fastening screws that are tightened to a torque angle!
Replace nuts for the steering gear fastening screws!
Observe specified tightening torques and torque angle.

Move steering gear into installation position.

1.1. Screw in fastening screws -1- and -2- for the steering gear, but do not tighten them!

Fit universal joint.

2.1. Grease the journal of the input shaft for the steering gear using a non-water-soluble lubricant (e.g. lithium-saponified grease).

2.2. Slide the universal joint -1- to the correct position in the center.

2.3. Tighten fastening screws -1- and -2- on the steering gear. Initial tightening 80 Nm (59 ft. lb.) Final tightening +180°

Information

Always replace the clamping screw on the universal joint.

2.4. Tighten clamping screw on the universal joint -1- . Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ft. lb.)

Connect connectors for vehicle signals -1- and power supply -2- . Connectors must lock with an audible click.
